A sad reminder to watch for ticks, other pests this summer... My brother-in-law's 3 year old Doberman died in his sleep Friday night, and I am heartbroken. He had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, diagnosed early by his vet. He finished a full course of antibiotics, and seemed to be doing well. But, early last week, his lymph nodes started to swell again. The vet again prescribed antibiotics, and again he seemed to be doing well. And they kept a flea and tick killer on him year-round, since he spent a lot of time outside. But my husband and I got a call from my brother-in-law Saturday morning telling us the news. We were shocked since we saw the dog on Thursday and he looked and acted totally normal and healthy. Upon inspecting the body, they found two new ticks attached. They don't know exactly what happened, but the new ticks were also carriers of RMSF. So, my reminder to everyone is to start now, if you haven't already. Keep bedding clean, keep your pets medicated against ticks and fleas, and check your pets for buggies. I check my dogs nightly. It doesn't take up too much of your time, and it could very well save your dogs life. |
That is really sad.. thanks for sharing this story with us.. and may he rest in peace... what can you buy to put on your dogs for ticks.. I live in the city and have a small back yard.. but I use multi 10 on my guys and it covers a lot but not ticks... anne |
Oh my. This is so sad. My thoughts are with your brother. I washed the girls yesterday and found a teeny tiny tick the size of a pencil tip on top of Rosie's nose during her bath. That really freaked me out. It was so small that if it hadn't have been on her nose where the hair parts, I might not have found it. |

i also found a tick on lacey last friday grrrrr. it seems like there are alot more ticks here and up in tomahawk we havent gotten any, whats up with that are they migrating south? last year in our subdivision there were 7 dogs that became ill from ticks. |

Thank you for your kind thoughts. My husband's childhood lab had lymes disease, as well as my parent's miniature schnauzer. Both were easily treated and it did not seem to affect their quality of life. But I had never really even heard of RMSF before. And the fact that he was dilligent about applying topical meds is super scary. |

I am so sorry about your brother-in-laws dog. The ticks and fleas are horrible and then they want us to put chemicals on our animals that poison them. I use all natural products and spray, spray, spray. Its like a never unending battle. Our poor babies. It just has to be worse this year everywhere because we have never had a problem before. |
I\'m so very sorry to hear of your brother-in-law\'s Doberman. Here in northern NY state, we are infested with deer ticks. All you have to do is touch the grass, and your hand is full of ticks. That\'s how bad it is. The shame of it is that we just can\'t let our yorkies run in the grass. They are confined to our deck and daily walks on paved roads. I wish there was another way. :( Thanks for the heads up. We can never let our guard down. |
Sorry about the doggie!! Last week i found a tick on Phoenix, ive never even seen a tick and didnt know what the heck it was!!! :eek: It was huge! I was rubbing behind his ear and felt a bump. Looked and there it was. |
