Tear Stains Does anyone have a good safe method for removing and preventing tear stains? I have found a post on another site telling of a product called "Dog Tears". Someone said it contains an antibiotic, and I am concerned long term use could be harmful. Has anyone heard of this or used it? I don't want to use any product on Lacie unless I know it is safe. Yes - most of those contain Tylosin - which is related to erythromycin. Personally, I would *not* give any animal (or human) a low dose antibiotic daily - for what is essentially a cosmetic issue (the staining). The reason is that these low dosages lend to creating antiobiotic resistant strains of bacteria - which puts entire populations at risk in the future. It could also be harmful, for example, if your dog developed an infection where they wanted to use an erthro-based medicine - but the medicine did not have much effect bc your dog had such a "tolerance" to it, based upon receiving the low-daily-dose. Hope that makes sense. :) Sometimes, both tearing and staining is related to food allergies - so, maybe a look at diet may help - can I help there? |
Tear Stains Hi Marcel, :aimeeyorkYour little Wylie is sure a cutie. Thanks for the reply to my post. I felt it was not safe to give those products myself, but was hoping for suggestions. I do know food allergies can cause the tear staining, and have done some research on it. Lacie does seem to have an allergy, and I have been trying to pinpoint it. I took her off canned food containing beef, but I believe it is caused more by outside grasses and weeds. We live in a rural part of the Colorado mountains, and have a lot of tall natural grasses, etc. I have been shampooing her with a good Oatmeal product which helps. Her diet consists of both dry and wet Evo chicken food, and I cook chicken breasts and add peas and carrots to it. She receives very few treats, and those are pretty healthy also. I do not buy products with grains in them. Any suggestion you have will be appreciated. Thanks you, Nita |

try spring water for drinking. tap has a lot of stuff that can cause the problem. good luck. we have the same issue with eye gunk. |

Grass is a tough one, if that's the culprit - a real tough one. As for the food - just fyi, chicken is the most highly allergenic meats - of all meats. Not to say she's allergic - but it might be worth a shot to eliminate for about 6 weeks and see if there is a change, it'd be pretty easy to do. Instead, you could feed something (within Innova probably) w/ Lamb, Buffalo, Venison, Rabbit - something along those lines. And see if it makes a difference with her eyes. Marcel has terrible problems with cooked chicken - but is fine w/ raw, organic chicken - which is not uncommon since cooked chicken is lacking its natural enzymes, whereas raw retains them. We do Natures Variety Raw Frozen Medallions - just incredible food. Anyway, if you try this - and then the water issue as mentioned by the other poster (or, try the water first and then the food) - maybe it'll help. :) |
Helo, I use bottle water for the tear stains and also J&J baby shampoo. Works great |
Tear Stains I am surprised to hear Chicken can be a cause for allergies. I did some research awhile back, and it said Beef is the main cause for allergies in dogs. I am confused now, but I have only given Lacie beef a few times, so think I will try that or something else. Is venision, rabbit, also considered the same as beef? Also, in regard to water, we are on well water, which has been tested and is very safe and healthy, and when we travel we use bottled water, so that isn't a concern. I will check into the Angel Eyes also, not familiar with it. Thanks to all who has given me suggestions, it really is a big help to me, and Lacie says she is glad I found this site. |

Warm Water I just use warm water and a cotton ball to clean the tear stains and a flea comb to remove the eye gunk. The warm water helps soften it and it combs right out. I just got my girls a week or two ago and they are pretty good sitting still for their daily brushing/grooming. It seems like their hair picks up anything and everything, so I'll brush them while I watch TV. Both of them sit in my lap at the same time while I groom them. |
