Beware of beef jerky! I wanted to warn everyone ... do NOT give your baby beef jerky. I gave Onni a small piece, but too big for her I guess and she got it caught in her throat. I was able to pull it out, but very scary none the less.:eek::eek::eek::eek: Onni will never have beef jerky again!!! :thumbdown |
I'm glad that Onni is ok.. I'm scared to give my puppy any treats other than fruits and veggies. |
Me too. She is doing fine, but scared the pants off MoM! Needless to say she is not getting anything that she cannot chew easily ever again and disolves easily and is easily digested!! |
My Yorkie would go crazy for chicken jerky. It didn't seem very soft, so put a piece in water and left it for a long time. It never softened !! Same thing with Greenies, they never softened, I even tried simmering the Greenie and it never got soluble. I decided it they were not water soluble, they would never digest so I stopped all treats like that. Our vet says to not even give her rawhide. I was giving her the little MilkBone biscuits that look like sausages. She begged for them whenever she passed the dog food cabinet. Now we are down to 2 per day. She was having terrible slimey, stinky diarrhea. This was happening with too many MilkBone treats and the expensive Eagle Pack Holistic and Innova Holistic canned dog food. Now she is doing great on home cooked food consisting of brown rice mixed with chicken or lean beef and vegetables. I think the canned food may have been too rich or had too many additives. I do put out a small portion of dry kibble to "snack" on, but she's not too keen on that. I'm also giving her PetTab vitamins. My Westie took those and lived to be 15. |
I'm not sure this was human or dog beef jerky, it would seem human beef jerky would have way too much salt for a dog. You should always supervise your dog when giving any chew product. Even the safe ones say on the packaging use with supervision. Dogs have been known to choke on many things even carrots. I'm glad Onni is ok, but remember it's safer for them to chew on big pieces not small pieces. You should take the chew product away when it's small enough to fit in their mouths. |
It was human and it was not a big piece; it also was not salty at all. But that said, she will NEVER have another one pass her precious little lips. I am not taking any chances with chewies. If it will not disolve easily then she is not getting it. |

The only reason I mentioned it is that human products, that don't even taste salty, can have high does of salt, which can be deadly to yorkies. Most jerky has been soaked in a salt solution before drying as this aids in the dehydration process. |

Thanks for the heads up :2omg: ... I will never let her have any again. |
Glad she is ok. It is so hard to find good treats for these little ones. |
