My Princess has severe Kidney infection She has been in the hospital for a week now. Not responding to the antibiotics. I decided to put her down today, but when I got to my vets, She perked up. My vet (she is a saint) said there is still hope. She has been on a water IV and catheter all week. Her tests have not improved in the last couple days. She is not working this week end, so she said she would take her home with her to change out the fluids. Now you all know she is a saint. She hasn't been eating, so I went to the store and got her a treat. Apple and Lime Yoplait yogurt. She gobbled it up and her eyes cleared up quite a bit. My vet was astounded! She figured she was severely depressed because I wasn't there for a week. We walked around with her and she was very alert. I changed my mind and she is now at home at my vet's house. I hope I haven't prolonged the inevitable. Just had to share. Guess she broke me into being a sissy!;) |
aww I am glad you are putting your trust into your vet. she does sound like a saint. I hope she feels better really soon. Sonya |
BEST WISHES TO YOU AND YOUR LITTLE ONE! If your vet hasn't already told you, she needs to be on a LOW PROTEIN diet during this time and through recovery!!! 10% or less is best. It's hard to find, unless you are doing canned food or cooking for her, but those kidneys don't need anymore stress on them right now. |
Yes, please make sure they are not feeding her a/d or something like that...And remember that canned foods are tricky...It may say 7% on the label, but that is not accurate. You have to convert it to a dry matter basis to know how much protein your baby is actually getting. First you find out how much protein is listed (7%) and how much moisture is listed (usually around 80%). Then take 100 minus the moisture listed and you get 20...Then take the amount of protein listed 7 and divide it by 20...That comes out to 35% which is way more than your baby should be getting. Diet is key...Ask your vet to put your baby on canned L/D or something like that. I usually recommend L/D because it's low in protein and does not contain animal protein which can put stress on the liver and kidneys... |
I hope and pray that your baby will be ok. I will say a prayer for her recovery. What a great vet you have! |
I'm so sorry for your little one. How old is she? I hope she recoversf, and you find you made the right decision. |
Poor baby. Does she still have good kidney function? They can live on 30% function with treatment. Hopefully she just needs more time for the antibiotics to work. I will keep her in my prayers |
