how much food a day?
 
Hi everyone!..

I have a almost 4 month old yorkie/maltese mix.... she weighs about 2 1/2 lbs... I feed her a 1/4 of kefir in the morning.. dry food is out all day that she picks on very little.. and a 1/4 cup of chicken and veggies at night.. is this too much? She seems to be starving ALL DAY LONG.. when I take her for aw walk she tries to eat EVERYTHING ON THE GROUND... but when she eats her food her stomach blows up like a balloon.. I'm so confused.. we are going to talk to the vet today but if any of you know what I should do I would appreciate your responses... thank you!

My 8.25 lb Edie is on a diet. The vet said she should eat 1/4 cup of her kibble twice a day (1/2 cup total). But I need to cut it back a little for her to lose the weight.

I'll let you know how it goes. Right now, I really don't see much weight loss....

Hmmm, well - first, congrats on your new baby :)!!! Personally, I probably wouldn't give the kefir - I'd probably just skip it. What dry food are you giving?

Also, *when* does her tummy "blow up" - after dinner in the evening? If so, it sounds like a change is needed there. Are you giving supplements with the evening homecooked dinner (bc you do need to :))? Also, since dogs don't need veggies - she could be having quite a bit of trouble with them - which might be why her tummy is distressed.

So, you could choose a good kibble and canned combo and/or do a bit of homecooking. Either way, it's important to get her to eat in the morning - so perhaps mixing her kibble w/ some canned might be a good option for you? :)

Or perhaps she needs a little food at noon, too? I've always fed mine three times a day.

Probably with the Kefir and homecooked she is getting too much food without supplemening. Are you interesting in homecooking instead of using dog food?

What vegetables are you giving?
What kibble are you using?
How many bowel movements a day?

If her diet is mostly dog food (like kibble) and she only gets a few bites of homecooked a day then you don't need to supplement. Since she is getting between 1/4 and 1/2 cup a day (between the chicken, carrots and kefir) of homecooked, she is eating very little dog food. So she isn't getting the vitamins and minerals she needs (that have already been added to the dog food), therefore, you have to add your own (to the people food)... This can be tricky with a pup and I would recommend you talk to a nutritionist if you want to keep giving her this much people food. Does that help?

Oh yes, thank you!.. I'll start giving her very little kefir and ill give her very little chicken and carrots or another vegetable and then she will eat her dry dog food more.. I have Canidae for her.. I hear it's one of the best and she eats it so it works.. she is very healthy and active which is good I just feel so bad that she cries for more food (the kefir and the chicken).. but she still will eat the dry food but she doesn't cry for it... I guess she just has to get used to the routine.. thank you everyone for your help!
