We are thinking about getting Zoey spay She will be 3 yrs old in august. She was a rescue dog and has been a very sick girl. Yeast infections, skin allergies, and she had an embillical hernia. She is doing much better know and we are thinking about getting her "fixed". How would she cope with it at this age? Thanks Bob |
Hi Bob! I don't think this Iowa girl has had a chance to welcome you to YT. Zoey should do just fine being spayed, many dogs who are bred are spayed at an older age and do adapt. I think knowing your vet is the most important thing with these little ones. |
I would do it as females that are not spay can get breast cancer and pyometra which is very dangerous - see info below as a yorkie on my group almost died of this a few weeks ago and she is 2 years old Pyometra & Uterus Infections in Dogs |
make sure they use isoflurine or sevoflurine for anesthesia |
Awe, poor little thing, she sure is lucky to have you for a dad. I think she should cope with it just fine, unless the doctor thinks otherwise. I have read about dogs getting pregnant for the first time at age five and having real difficulty because the bones don't give, so to be safe I would definitely spay her. We read all the time here on the forum about dogs "accidentally" getting pregnant and that can be a pretty bad situation. You are reducing her chances of getting other illnesses as well by spaying her. Best of luck with your decision, and welcome to Yorkietalk. |
I got my little girl speyed at 2 yo and she is Much better for it. She has way less PMT. turned out she had an infection which not even the vet picked up which explained why she was so miserable before. |
I do not know the answer, but in my mind 3 is not old for a dog breed that can live to 15 years. There must be a risk at any age of dog, surely. I agree have a talk with your vet to put your mind at rest.:) |
welcome to YT let us know what u decide to do ..... and how it all goes :D good luck! |
