My Yorkie has tonsilitis...she won't eat Our little Gracie woke me up at 4am this morning haking and coughing. She was so bad we called the emergency vet number. He said as long as she is breathing she will be okay to bring her in when they open. The vet was booked, but was able to work Gracie in. Found out she has tonsilitis. She was given shot and then was giving prescription of amoxicillin to take every 12 hours and a cough medicine to take every two hours until cough stops. I could not get the dropper in her mouth so had to give the medicine to her off my finger. On the way home she threw up foamy white stuff all over my lap. The doctor did ask if she had thrown this up yet, which she hadn't at the time. Since we have been home she looks really sickly and has not eaten at all. You can see it in her eyes and I feel so bad for her. I am worried about her eating. I gave her fresh soft dog food and nothing. Tried some yogurt and nothing. She just lays at my feet, but won't come to me when I call her. When I go to get her she walks away, like she wants me to leave her alone. I am concerned about her eating. Anyone have this experience? I am hoping she is better by tomorrow. Gracie's 1st birthday was Monday and we are havinga party for her tomorrow night. The doctor said if she has not stopped coughing in 3 days to bring her in. Since we left the vet she has only coughed/hacked a few times. Worried mama to Gracie, Heather |
Poor girl! My Maltese had tonsillitis a few weeks ago and what actually got us into the vet was that he kept throwing up. My vet said that the drainage from the tonsils upsets their tummies so that's usually what will cause them to puke. Tuffy is a piglet so I never had any problems getting him to eat. My main concern was making sure he was hydrated. I used a syringe to force him to drink water. My tip to making him take the Amox pill was tucking it into a Gerber chicken stick. They are really soft and easy to eat and won't upset their stomachs. You are doing the right thing by giving her soft foods.. you might want to chill it in the fridge so it's soothing to eat. I hope she feels better! |
If she does not start eating giver her nutrical to keep her energy up! Make sure she keeps drinking water and taking her meds, really forcer her to take them if you have to! Also if you feel like she is that sickly and do not think you should wait 3 days take her back to the vet! Caution never hurt! I am sorry that your baby is sick! I hope she gets better and has a speedy recovery! Happy Birthday Gracie!!! |
The Amox is liquid form. So can't really put it in anything. How long did it take for your Yorkie to feel better? Heather |
Bruce's mom....what is Nutrical and where do I get it? Heather |
Nutrical is a good suggestion! You could probably mix the Amox with the nutrical to make it more tempting for her. You can buy Nutrical at Petsmart, Petco or any pet type place.. It's a nutritional supplement. Tuffy never acted sick so it was hard to tell when he actually got better. But he stopped throwing up and was back to drinking water normally after 2 days. |

Hubby is stopping by the vet on his way home so will give her some soon. Hopefully we can get her to take it. |
See if you can get your baby to lick an ice cube. Her little baby throat is probably really sore. The Nutrical should help sustain her until the meds kick in and help her feel better. Sorry to hear your little one is sick..... good luck..... keep us posted. |
I just thought of something else that might help her get some fluids in, a little bit of low sodium chicken broth. You can see if she'll sip it or freeze it into an ice cube if she still doesn't want to. How is she feeling? |
My female Jewels gets tonsilitis also she seems to only get it around sep ,oct, she usually gets a fever and will not eat, our vet usually gives a shot also and then sent home with antibiotics, she might not be eating if she has a fever .Her throat is very sore and it hurts to swallow, it usually takes a couple of days for them to get back to normal if she is not feeling a tinch better in a day it usually only takes a good 36 hrs after that shot for her to start to feel better, temp going down etc, if not I would call my vet again, the nutrical is very good if none available get her some honey , and Jewels would lick ice cubes, eggs was usually her first food she would accept, but all of mine love eggs. They have pedialyte frozen pops too, they work well also, sometimes I would use and eye dropper of it and slowly give it to her a drop or two at a time. Good luck and hope she is feeling better. |
