Innova Dog Food vs. Innova Evo Hi everyone, I'm new to YorkieTalk. I'm trying to research a new food for my little girl, Martini. I've heard a lot of good things about Innova. I can't decide between Innova small bites and Innova Evo small bites. I know that a high protein diet is good for dogs but I'm just a little concerned that Innova Evo has too much protein for Martini, she is only about 4lbs. Any suggestions out there for Martini and I? :aimeeyork I've never given her canned food but during my research to find the best dry food, I've read that some members give their little ones a spoonful of canned food with their dry food. Is it better to give them a little canned food or are they just giving them the can food because their little ones are pickey eaters? |
First, WELCOME :D! Canned food is always wonderful to give bc it is less processed food, in comparison to dry (kibble), which is as processed as you can get. So, canned dog food or "real, fresh, human food" is always superior and will give a nutritional boost - and added moisture as well. As far as high protein - personally, I'm a big fan of high protein, grain free; the only time high protein is a concern is if there is an underlying health issue like liver, kidney, pancreas - then you'd need a more custom diet. The thing to consider with Innova vs. Innova EVO is that EVO, for whatever (dumb) reason, is one higher protein food that is ALSO higher in fat - and that is where I've heard, anecdotally, problems - like, some nausea or poo problems. I fully believe it's the higher fat - bc then they switch that same dog over to a different higher protein food, and they're fine. Many dogs do fine on the EVO, but if your dog has any issues - I just want you to know this so if you see a weird issue, you think of the *fat* perhaps before the protein. Other good ones are Natures Variety Instinct, Orijen - are either of those available? :) |
I feed Innova small bites, and my dogs do very well on it. |
I kinda go back and forth between Welliness and Innovia. I keep kibble out all the time. I have 2 senior schnauzers and a yorkie. Our yorkie is 10mo. old. I like the canned Innovia because it has less protein than some others and I need to feed that to one of my schnauzers. They really prefer it over the Welliness but I just give them a change once in awhile. I think they probably get tired eating the same ole same ole just like we would. I think you will like it and mixing alittle of the canned with the kibble is a good idea. I have done that too. Kayla (yorkie) is a little pig. She will eat just about anything. Not picky at all. |
Thank you for all the information. What do you think about giving her a spoonful of canned food in the morning and the evening with her dry food? Would it be a good idea to feed Martini canned food only. She just recovered from Hemorragic Gastroenteritis (HGE), so I'm determined to find the best food for her (I was so worried about her when she was sick)!!!!! |

Yes, it'd be just fine to give both canned and kibble - better actually, than just kibble alone. :) |
I switched from Innova EVO to Innova small bites. The EVO was just too much protien for them. They are doing great on the Innova small bites. |
I've done tons of research on HGE and the etiology is unknown. However, a few couple theories are bacterial infection, or bacterial toxins. The possible bacteria is Clostridium perfringens. :( Predisposing factors are toy/teacup breed dogs (especially yorkies and poodles), between the ages of 2-4, and urban living dogs. Martini is 3 1/2yrs old and we live downtown, in the city. I had read on one website that diet could also be a cause so I'm changing her food. I want to give her the best food possible. I'm still looking into Innova, unless I read about another brand that is better!:animal36 |
I feed my puppy a 50/50 % mix of the 2 Innova mini bites and Innova EVO mini bites. My vet said EVO was a great food to feed him. I had already bought the Innova so I mix the 2 together. He loves it!:aimeeyork |
my little yorkie had the same HGE Quote:

Low Protein (LP) Hi all...would anyone have a suggestion for a LP food for my 14 yo? I saw the post on Innova small bites....... |
I have used the Innova since Deiter has a sensitive belly. And we get along fine with it. He loves it. We do the kibbles, the canned makes him have the runs. So now I just stick to the kibbles. |
