New Yorkie owner needs help with feeding. I am a new yorkie owner. Actually I am a new Gammaw ;) I bought my 13 year old daughter a yorkie two weeks ago. The breeder had her on Science Diet but thanks to all of the wonderful information that I have learned from this site I switched her food to Canidae. I gave her one cup of food on Saturday and she has only eaten about 1/4 of it as of this morning. Today I mixed it with water to soften it some and she ate a small portion of it. I am very worried. Can anyone please give me some advice as to what I should do to get her to eat. She weighs 2.3 lbs and is 13 weeks old. Thank you so much for any information you can give. Nicki :aimeeyork |
Hi Nicki!! Welcome to YT!!! Any time you change a dog's food, you should transition over a week to 10 days by mixing in the new with the old until a complete transition takes place. The taste is probably new to her. As awful as SD is, you should mix the SD with the Canidae for a week to gradually wean her off of it. Their little systems can really get upset if you switch them too quickly. Adding water will only dilute the food and make it mushy. I would also recommend keeping some Nutrastat handy and give her some of that to keep her blood sugar up. If she doesn't eat for a long period of time, she might go into hypoglycemia and you can lose her. Try throwing the kibbles and let her chase them. That might get her to eat too. A puppy should eat several meals a day. Post some pictures of her!! We would love to see your new "grandpup"! Linda & PACK |

Welcome to YT.:) If that pup has really only eaten about 1/4 cup of food in six days, please give canned food immediately. Do you have nutrical? Has she been vet checked? If you don't want to used canned food you can boil some white meat chicken and add some veggies and carbs (like rice) and talk to your vet. |
