Swallowed a chunk of rawhide Hi there, My puppy Buffy swallowed a nickel-sized piece of a rawhide chew shoe. Has anyone's dog eaten a bigger piece of rawhide? Were there any repercussions? Any advice would be appreciated. All the best, mb :aimeeyork |

I agree. I was warned by my vet and breeder NOT to give my dogs rawhide. If she appears ok and is eating and drinking, chances are she's fine. Good luck! |
So far, so good. What are some danger signs i should look for? Could the rawhide get stuck in her stomach, intestines, etc? |
What are some alternatives for chewy treats/toys to keep puppies busy? I tried Nylabones and she likes them but not as much as rawhide, etc. :( |
Some things I would watch for are diahrea, not being able to go to the bathroom and not eating. They would be warning signs that maybe it didn't pass. |
Try bullysticks (they are like a long beef tendon)...it will take them awhile, also better then ears are good, and dingo beef jerky or chicken jerky strips. It is more imrpotant for her to be safe then to give her rawhide as a treat!!! |
My dogs love chicken jerky strips, bully sticks, greenies, baby carrots, watermelon, apple slices, etc. There's a TON of natural and healthy things that dogs can eat instead of rawhide. |
I am under the idea that those bully sticks are actually bull penis' and that they really stink, does anyone know the true story on those? |
I heard the same about bully sticks. I refuse to give my dogs anything that wreaks to high heaven! So I choose beef tendons instead of bully sticks. I just don't like the idea of my Yorkie chewing on...well...you know... And then trying to give me a lick/kiss... |
Watch for vomiting.. especially after drinking water or eating, because that can indicate a blockage. I'm sure she'll be fine though. :) |
Good luck! As long as she's eating and playing normally, I'm sure she's probably fine. Both of my dogs just love rawhide and they get it, just as long as I'm there to supervise. Try Greenies. Both of mine love greenies as well |

Thanks to everyone for their advice! I'll keep a close eye on her AND, keep her away from rawhide! :) |
I am sure your little one will be okay. I don't give rawhide, pigs ears or greenies but I do give the tendons on occasion. There the sprial ones I think. Bully sticks don't stink btw. Smal treats for trsining supplement their meals and they have lots of toys! :D |
I would look for any changes in Buffy's behavior, especially in bowel movements and eating and drinking habits. Since she didn't choke, the rawhide will probably be broken down and digested. I do not give rawhide or pigs ears not only because they are a choking hazard, but because they pose a risk of bacterial infection such as Salmonella infantis which can cause flu-like symptoms (e.g., nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea). My babies love BullySticks. I think they are a hoot!!! Penis treats -- like they aren't doing the cows (or bulls for that matter) any good. Here is info about BullySticks from http://www.bullysticks.com :p Bully Sticks are 100% Bull penises, Not a tendon, and not processed meat strips. Bully Sticks are dried, lightly smoked or natural flavor and delivered to your door. We never try to hide what they are by giving them little cute names. |
I don't give rawhide to Sully anymore....but I used to, and he's swallowed plenty of chunks of it and been fine. (But it scared me that he could have choked, or will in the future, so, no more.) These days, Sully would just a well chew on his toys - and an occasional cube of frozen applesauce. But he does have a beef rib bone that he likes chewing on and carrying around the house. He can't really bite hard enough into it for it to hurt him but he loves licking on it and carrying it around. |
Beef ribs sounds like a GREAT chewie. I sometimes give the little round bone from a beef shank. I have the butcher cut them 1/2" thick PERFECT for a Yorkie!!! LOL |

It lasted about 35 minutes and then went straight to the trash and Sully had to have a bath. Samantha, Sully has never had a bully stick but I know about "that smell" that is just too bad to bear, haha!!! |
LOL.....I'm glad your bf described it like that because I have to agree...I told my bf that it smells like a stank buttcrack...it permeates too....lol, I keep it in a ziplock bag in another ziplock bag and he is only allowed for 15 min. before he gets bath...lol, and only on the hardwood floor...lol, no rugs |
