HI EVERYONE!!! im so worried about neutering LEO
 
Hi everyone, Im new to this forum
I have a mixed breed yorkie and maltese named Leo
... I am soooo anxious about having Leo neutered, i called various animal clinics and hospitals and finally settled with one which was recommended to me.

However, they answered all my questions- I am scheduled for bloodwork but they will not have an IV in him during the surgery- is this something I should be greatly concerned about?

the receptionist said that it is not necessary but I just cant bear the thought of something happening =(

I was a nervous wreck when we had this done to Joey; I know how you feel. I'm sorry I can't help you with your question; I do know IV's hurt so I would be glad if they didn't use it. Most I thought used gas, so I'm not sure why an IV would be necessary. Good luck with the surgery, and know that this is a good thing to be doing. I'll be praying for you and your little guy.

Tyson just came home from his surgery. He's a bit groggy, but he's still his normal self. I think he's plotting some form of revenge on me though.

Oh im so glad Tyson is doing well!! hahah plotting revenge..

did he have an IV in him during the surgery?

Thank you!!! So am I. I was so worried, but hee did have an IV. They shaved a spot on his front right leg for it. I love his vet, they called me periodically through out the day and gave me updates on his condition. :)

Glad to hear your little one is resting okay. The IV is put in so if the dog starts crashing they can immediately bring them out of the sedation. A good vet will do this.

Livingdustmops, the OP's vet isn't planning on using an IV, does this mean she should find another vet?

my vet said he would use it if he finds it necessary.

I think when i go in to do the bloodwork and heartworm test prior to the neutering- I am going to request that an IV be put in him...

Zoey is having her spay today and she will have an IV. It's usuallly done to keep them hydrated because remember they haven't eaten from the previous night. It's also in case they do crash and need to be brought out faster. Plus they tent to give a bit of pain meds and antibiotics in there closer to the end of the surgery...so I was told. I had and IV when Lulu was spayed so I presume it's standard practice here in NY.

My little Ella Bean just went through her spay - literally, i just received the phone call from the vet she made it through her surgery without a hitch and had 12 baby teeth removed. I was so worried before the surgery. She is only 2.7 pounds and she was a champ!

They had an IV to keep her hydrated and I felt much better because of that. I am going to go pick her up in two hours!:yelrotflm

My Johnny Cash crashed during his neuter surgery and they had to stop the procedure after reviving him. They believe he is allergic to the anesthesia. Even though he isn't neutered, I still had to pay for it as though he was!

They recommended neutering him again but noted that he could have the same reaction (and I would still have to pay another $400 without having the procedure completed!) I opted to forego neutering because I feel like we may have been blessed the first time around to have been able to revive him.

All dogs under anesthesia should have an IV.
I really don't know why that vet doesn't do it as standard pracitce.

It can be difficult to place an IV and if an emergency arises, how can they do it quickly? He should also get fluids. I would insist.

I completely agree. This was one of the deciding factors in finding my vet. I moved to Miami from Chicago and didn't know who to go to. I met with four vets before I found one I was comfortable spaying my baby girl with. The deciding factor, besides his demeanor and holistic style of practice - was the standard use of an IV.

Especially with our tiny ones, its so important.
