My little girl needs to lose weight HELP I just took my Tali to the VET because she was limping on one of her back legs. The VET said her knee pops in and out and that she needs to lose some weight like 1-2 pounds. She is only 10 pounds but she is a little dog. Which i was noticing that she was getting a little chuncky. The VET put her a supplement for her knee so I am hoping thats helps her. She doesn't needs surgery right now when are going to try the supplement first. But what I need help with is helping her lose some weight. I am going her start walking her more. Is here anything that I can do? i dont want to change her diet to much? How hard is it to make a dog lose weight? Help Thanks Stephanie |
If you have a tread mill you can train her to walk on it and it helps them lose weight. |
When u are not walkin her play with her as much as u can, i throw the ball for bailey in the back garden before his walk makes him tired so he does not want to pull on the lead so much and walks to heel :D No Treats (well cut down on them) or choose the healthy treats. Hope her little hip gets better without the opp. keep us updated :P |
One thing you can do that will be VERY beneficial in helping w/ her weight loss is to make sure you are not feeding her late at night. Feed her several small portions throughout the day, up until early afternoon. Gradually increase her excersize and play time. |
I know you don't want to change the food you're feeding, so the only thing you can do is to give her less of it and increase her exercise. My vet told me to change Max's food to Hill's prescription W/D and that's helped him a lot. I'm not saying it's the highest quality of food out there, but he DID lose weight....we also had to stop feeding him scrambled egg whites, bits of toast and bread (dh did that, I only gave him the tail end of my egg whites). I also started using his dry kibble as "treats" and don't put down a bowl for him to free feed from anymore. I measure his food religiously b/c I don't want him to get pancreatitis again, which my vet said was very likely due to the fact that he was overweight and his pancreas was being overworked. Even a pound or two for them is like us having a 25-50 lb sack on our backs. When I realized that, I wasn't feeling so mean for giving him less food! |
