Update on London's spay..

So we went to the vet today and it all went well. London went to get the pre-op for her spay, but before that i asked if i can take her home the same day of the spay and the doc said yes so i said ok then that's great lets do the pre op. So she did the ecg and bloodwork and also a heartworm test and they are going to call me with the results tommorrow and we'll take it from there. They told me the estimate amount and it sounds all good. Now....my only worry is, i asked if she should get her dewclaws removed and the doc said it's up to me, yes it will hurt and be uncomfortable for her for a few days, but i feel like the way the nail is growing i should do it. What do you guys think? She is also getting baby teeth removed that never fell out and getting them cleaned, and they send me home with pain medicine. They also give her some before. And the anesthesia they use is isoflourine, she also said she has done operations on tiny ones before, even smaller than London. She was a really nice doc and she is doing the operation herself. I just have to figure out my schedule but most likely it will be on a Thursday in 2 or so weeks. Ahh im so scared!

Bella only has one dew claw I guessed they missed it:eek:
Doesnt seem to be causing her issues yet. London has a funky nail or something? If it is getting caught on stuff I would definately get it removed now before it gets ripped off. (if that is even possible) Those areas are so small I think i would get it removed. She will have forgotten about it in a few days.

Glad to hear that you found a Vet that you like....That is a big thing.....Personally, I would go ahead and have the dew claws removed at the same time. She is already going to be out of sorts from the spay and the teeth....And this way, you won't have the worry of her ever snagging her claws on any furniture or fabrics or carpets....Or even snagging on her brother or sister while playing

Best Thoughts for which ever way you decide to go...

Because the preop blood work wasn't done the same day as surgery, the surgery should be done soon or the blood work will need to be redone. I always prefer same day blood work but I wouldn't wait more than about a week for the surgery now because the values can change... This is my personal preference.

They are just growing weird..

I would def. get the dew claws removed. Sounds like your vet has everything covered. I personally would opt to get as much done that they need done while their under the anesthesia....better than having them have to undergo it more times! Good luck!

I personally wouldn't get her dewclaws removed. Although I'm not sure, I can just equate it with declawing a cat or having my own fingernails removed.

Meeko had 4 declaws when I got him. I only had his back 2 removed because they weren't attached by bones and were very flimsy! I was scared they'd get caught on carpet or something, so I got them removed. He did fine tho. He also had some teeth removed. This was about 3 weeks ago and he's all healed now. If her nail if growing in funny and you think it might be a problem later on, then I'd get it removed. I was really nervous too but, thought if I didn't and it did get caught on something later on, then it'd be an even bigger surgery. They sent us home with pain medicine and he didn't seem to be in pain at all. He was his normal, hyper self by the end of the night.

It'll be a little harder with the onsie tho. The first 2 days he had bandages over the stitches, so I put a onsie on. But on the third day, they removed the bandages so they could dry out and heal faster. So, it was back to the e-collar. It was rough for the rest of the week but, I really think it was worth it.

It is a little weird that you got the blood work done without the surgery. Our vet did the blood work the morning of the surgery to make sure everything was fine. Good luck with whatever you decide tho! I know it's hard not to worry but, she'll be fine!

I guess different vets are comfortable with different things.
I know Ellie went in for an exam about one month before she had her teeth cleaned and the vet at the time said they would run blood work the morning of the procedure to see what her body was doing that day... That is why I would hesitate to wait.

mainegirl 05-21-2008 05:41 AM

Some vets send the blood out to a reference lab to be analyzed if they don't have an in-house machine. That may be why the vet has it done in advance. Usually the results are back in a few days.

I would get the dewclaw done at the same time just so you don't have to revisit it in the future.

I am about to spay too! So scared!

My Ella Bean is getting spayed on Friday and also needs about 12 baby teeth removed. She literally has a double set of teeth - top and bottom, including canines. I could not be more nervous!!!! My Bean is only 2.7 pounds and I am so scared. I love my vet and he says he will remove the canines first after the spay and if her heart rate or anything changes, they will wake her up and we will do the rest of the teeth in another month or two... Does anyone know, are they in a lot of pain after these procedures? How can I keep her safe?

mizzwanned 05-21-2008 08:50 AM

They called today and said everything came back normal, her blood, her heart, etc. So i plan on doing it next Thursday ahhhh! But i have to figure out cause i have school and work and i want to be there for her when she comes out so i am going to tell my manager i cant work. My bf will also be here but then there will be both of us caring to her needs, she will be the spoiled princess she is
