I am sorry i can't help you but I wanted to bump this up in hopes of a more knowledgeable person coming along |
My pom would only eat Cesars for 11 years I just switched her to California Natural canned like my others eat. Cali has very mild MVD no diet restrictions but I watch her protein intake and haven't had any problems with it. |
I know your little has pretty sevre MVD - so I don not think that feeding Cesare is a very good idea :( Can you try some other things, mashed potato or mashed sweet potato, or a little cottage cheese or a little bit of a scrambled egg. When mine were on kibble and they would act like brats and not eat it, I would take some and put it in a plastic baggie and smash it all up into tiny pieces and almost dust and then mix in other stuff so they were forced to eat it. Maybe try smashing the kibble and adding a tiny bit of cottage cheese or a little egg and some sweet potato, I bet he would like that  |
I wouldn't give any Cesars at all because of how severe his problem is. Have you tried Science Diet CANNED L/D? You could soak the Hepatic LS 14 in water or add a little bit of something (mashed potato to it). I wouldn't add too many carbohydrates because it will dilute the protein too much and I wouldn't add much more protein because of how severe the problem is... Maybe just a spoon of potato? |
what about I have tried the eggs nad rice and mixed it into his food and guess what . Ke picks through it and leaves his food there i even grinded his food and made him an omlet and as soon as i put it down he are 2 bits and left . Is it true that no dog will let them selves starve maybe if i stop pushing it he will eventually just eat or some one told me to not put any food out in the morning and then at lunch time put it out, see what happens if he doesnt eat take it away and try again later. |
Because of the severity of the problem and the fact that he like homecooked, I would talk to a nutritionist and do that. If he is refusing this food totally, he needs to eat something. I'd try the canned L/D first if you don't want to cook. Liver compromised dogs need to eat at least 3-4 times a day, so I would definately not wait til later to feed him. |

They refuse food when they're not feeling well. If he eats around 1 cup of food per day, it should be split up into as many meals as possible. In one of the articles in the liver shunt and mvd group, Dr. Center recommends at least 4-6 small meals per day to lighten the load on the liver and increase their protein tolerance which is important in the long run. Do you give any of the supplements like Denosyl or Milk thistle? Also, do you give fiber? This would be very helpful for your baby. It will help him tolerate the protein better. One source of fiber that has helped many liver compromised dogs is called BioPectin, and I believe you can buy it at Whole Foods. With these small changes, you should see a difference in him. Small, frequent (4-6) meals per day. Add water to each of the meals. I know you already give lactulose and it sounds like that's going well. Also, the denosyl and milk thistle that I think you already give as well. The BioPectin will help big time too. If he's refusing the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14, then definitely get a prescription for the canned L/D. If you want to homecook, I would seek out a nutritionist that has extensive experience with liver disease. |

Liver compromised dogs can't store glucose like healthy dogs, so they have to eat. You can't wait these dogs out because they can get very sick, and not eating can cause neurological symptoms in them. When Miko refuses food, I give him a little Pediasure every 3-4 hours to open up his appetite. This helps keep Miko from having his blood glucose levels drop and it maintains him until he will eat again. Remember, small frequent meals. |
How do you administer the Pediasure? Does he drink it on his own. I have a rescue guy (Durante) that is about 10 yrs old that won't eat anything much either. I usually feed my dogs a mixture of lean turkey burger, pedigree pouches, oatmeal, a little shredded wheat and cottage chhese or yogurt. I put The Missing Link supplement in their wet food, and when they won't eat their dry food (Royal Canin) I grind it up with my blender and mix it in as well. Their favorite treat is red peppers. All of the above, of course, Durante snubs, Won't go near NutriCal. I am stumped. He is surviving on rotissere chicken only, not even baked or boiled chicken. |
