Colitis Tylosin
 

Heard this helps Yorkies; I pulled the information off the web & gave it to my vet who ordered it & Murphy's been on it for over a week. It has helped somewhat. [the vet had tried everything & I had even cooked rice/turkey as it helped my other yorkie; vet even did a protoscope.] Do others keep their yorkies on Tylosin capsules for Colitis indefinitely - or do you use it like an antibiotic & stop after 10 days?

Hi there. My TJ had horrible episodes when he was little, with these noises that I thought were a monster inside him, then he would have globs and globs of mucus poops and then vomiting. I was at the Vet all the time. We tried Flagyl and it didn't work, we tried a limited diet to see if it was food related. I contained him so that he couldn't pick up anything around the house that would upset his GI track, then we did some blood work and it came back that he probably had an over growth of bacteria in his intestines. As a last resort, my Vet gave me a small bottle of Tylan Powder to try. I had to give him a tiny, tiny pinch of the powder everyday in his food. Well, it was a miracle, BUT it did take time. TJ was on it for about a year, when the Vet said I could stop. I had weaned him down to taking it every 5th day and by that time he hadn't had an episode in months, so the Vet said he was good for now.

The Vet said that Tylan is EXTREMELY SAFE and even if it had to be forever, it was ok. One of his own dogs had to be on Tylan Powder for life.

Even though TJ hasn't been on Tylan in over a year and a half, the Vet said there is a chance that he may have to go back on it, but at least we know it works for him.
