Teeth Cleaning ? Hi all, I am really very upset. Piccolo is 2,5 y old and yesterday I took him to a vet for his shots. She checked his teeth and said he must have them cleaned as soon as possible. I use Petzlife (both gel and spray) and brush his teeth EVERY day ! I can't see any tartar on them but the vet insisted on cleaning. I'd like some input from you, especially from those whose babies went through this ordeal. I don't know what to do. The vet said that Yorkies have to have this done at least three times during their lives. Is it true ? Please, please answer this post and give some advice. Thank you, Barb |
Hmm, I think I'd get a second opinion. Ellie teeth needed to be cleaned and were but it is time for it again and they don't need it. The vet wouldn't tell me she has to have it done just because. If you don't see any brown and if they aren't loose, I would be suspicious. By the way, Petzlife doesn't work well at all for some dogs. |

I will go to another vet for a second opinion. |
Buddy is going on 6/7 for his yearly and I had visions on the vet saying the samething. He has no tartar at all and I am prepared to tell him NO cleaning if he requests it. I brush everyday also and use petzlife twice a week. I am not doing all that work to keep his teeth nice if the vet wants to put him under and make some $. I am prepared to say NO if he suggests it. I would get a second opinion or just say NO. As long as the gums are not inflamed or there's tartar and no teeth are loose I think he's looking for some vacation money in MO. It's just not worth the risk to put them under unnecessarly. |
Does your dog have bad breath? If you are brushing everyday and there is no build up of tartar then I would not rush into having their teeth cleaned! Sounds like a good way for the vet to make a couple of $$$ off of you!!!! |
We have one who is 6 and we have never had to have her teeth cleaned. Wrigley is almost two and the vet said she doesn't need them done either! The little we just adopted who is 2 1/2 needs them done! I can see brown on her teeth and her breath is not great! If you don't see anything on the teeth or if there isn't bad breath, I would consult with someone else. |
Thanks again for your advice. His breath is fine and no loose teeth. The gums are nice and pink. I'm definetely going to see a different vet to check what he would say. |
