Yorkie Flea Control? Hello Everyone :) I have a problem with Tinkie's flea control medicine. Tinkerbell was infested with fleas when we brought her home from Petland. We have had the darndest time trying to get rid of them. Her vet told us to use Frontline and also some spray for the house. But, the Frontline seems to work for about 2 weeks then it become useless again  . I hate spraying chemicals on my dog and in my house. Do any of you have any good ideas I can use to get rid of these pesty fleas? What kind of treatment do you use on your puppies? Thanks, Annie & Tinkie |
fleas can develop an imunity to teh flea medication, so what you might want to try doing is change youre spot on meds every month or coupel of months.... as far as the infestation, the fleas that she had before layed eggs and now the eggs are hatching..... you need to clean the floor or carpet really good, im not rally fond of the sprays either, but so far we are keeping fleas under control by vacuming a lot, and also using flea shampoo twice a week (i tried the spot ons, but some of them are expensive and they didnt seem to work for me either...... the system i have now with flea shampoo and vacuming seems to work though.... oh and the flea shampoo makes him smell good too :)) |
It seems that EVERY one in our housing area has had troubles with fleas. Sandy had a horrible case of them a couple of months ago, and I felt SO guilty about it. I actually had my carpets professionally cleaned, then treated the carpets and furniture once again after that. I hated to use the chemicals, but I really didn't want the infestation to get out of control. It seems to have worked *knock on wood* - I used the frontline on Sandy, and it was the ONLY thing that worked. Aww, it was so sad when the fleas came, she would look at me with those big eyes and whimper - I felt like the worst Mommy in the world! Thank goodness they seem to be gone. |
Sentinel is a tablet you give your pet once a month to prevent flea, tick, worm and heartworm problems. And it's meat flavored -- tiny pill. My pets somehow manage to not get fleas with or without a specific flea medication, and they are out in the yard, the park, etc. I have skipped from using Frontline/Advantix and Heartguard to just the Sentinel. (I hate that ooky spot). Also, yorkie hair/skin is different from dogs that shed, and if you bathe the yorkie often, it can cut down on the effectiveness of the spot treatments. I used to wait at least a week before giving a bath when I used it. I also vacuum often. And garlic helps keep them off you. |
sentinal is expensive though isnt it???? i was looking at the treatments and it said $50 for the pill and you have to do it once a month!!! ......... At the time i was only bathing him when he needed it (not after the spot on, like you i waited about a week lucynfred) and they still didnt go away, so i switched to shampoo and i bath him on sundays and sometimes wend if he REALLY needs it, but yes i am very careful about over bathing him (come to think of it, he is always the one who WANTS a bath, and i am the one that is resisting :p) |
I am going through the same problem. I have been using ectosoothe 3X which I purchased from my veterinarian on my puppy. I have had good results from it. I have also heard that you can place a flea collar in the vaccum cleaner bag and once the fleas are trapped in there, they will die. |

I do have another question though. Is it safe to use flea shampoo on a yorkie puppy (I am not sure if you have a puppy or small grown adult)? I was told by Tinkie's vet never to use a flea shampoo on Tinkie. And, what type do you use? Thanks, Annie & Tinkie |
Thank-you for your post! We have never had a flea problem before so I am just beside myself on this. I wish we could afford to have them exterminated/professionally cleaned, but we can't. I have treated everything, but I think I need to do it again in another couple of weeks? Thanks again for your help! Annie and Tinkie |

i use zodiac three in one flea and tick shampoo for puppies..... its perfectly safe to use on a puppy i think tinkie and toby are abotu the same age (4 months???) ..... it smells nice and clean when the bath is done (and for days after)........., i think my fiance got it at petsmart ...... it is specially formulated... stops eggs from hatching........ kills fleas...... conditions...... its great..... |
Thank-you for the name of the product, I am going to the store tomorrow to look for it! Toby is adoorable!!! Tinkie is almost 6 months now, but she is very petite. Thanks again :-) Annie and Tinkie |
Orinskye, oh I hate we didn't get a receipt the other day for the Sentinel! It's NOT $50 a pill! Not here anyway!!! A six month supply for my 60 lb dog is going to be around $100(?). And for smaller dogs it gets cheaper. Let's see, I paid $120 for a vet check and booster shots when Luca Dean went and I got his and Hank's Sentinel in that $120 -- 6 month supplies for both. The checkup and shots were probably $35, so I'm guessing the Sentinel for Luca Dean (under ten lbs) was $30 and Hank's (> 30 lbs) was $50 or $60? Anyway, it was right at or less than $50 at the most for Dean's doses, so that comes out much cheaper than buying Heartgaurd and a topspot treatment I think. Hell, I dunno. Went to college and still can't do math. I hate using medicated shampoos. I do use Sulfadene on scratched spots though and it works great. Stinks. But works great. It's like neosporin for dogs. |
i dont think it has to do with how small they are when they put limits on products....... it has to do with age because they dont want you using a prodect that will harm in the development of their little organs.... i think tinkie will be fine....... i know they sell other zodiac flea and tick shampoos but make sure it says puppy on the bottle, (its written a little small underneath the prodect "headline") And thank you for all the compliments on my baby, (this pic is a little out of date .... he looks a lot less like a puppy these days and more like a dog :p , but i think it is one of my favs, with his short lil legs and all ......lol) |
