what is Ova/Par-Giardia 405 1yr ??? This is an item I just noticed on a vet bill. Looks like some kind of vaccine. Anyone out there familiar with it? Sorry, I can't call them right now, having a very bad vet day and can't speak to them rationally at the moment. |
It must be the giardia vaccine and I would not be happy it was given... Vaccine? A Giardia vaccine made by Fort Dodge Animal Health is on the market but it is not intended to prevent infection in the vaccinated animal. Instead the vaccine is licensed as an adjunct to treatment and is used to reduce the shedding of cysts by the vaccinated patient. This would be helpful in a kennel situation that is trying to reduce environmental contamination during an outbreak or where an animal keeps getting reinfected, but it is not helpful to the average dog whose owner wants to simply prevent infection. The 2006 American Animal Hospital Association Guidelines list this vaccine as “not recommended.” Giardia - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! |
sounds like you need to find a new vet. |
What is Ova/Par-Giardia 405 1yr I found your site while looking for the answer to the above question. I was going over my vet bill and found a $52.00 charge for Ova/Par-Giardia 405 1yr. I had taken my 14 year old cat to the vet to see why she was losing weight. Just paid the bill and came home. I can call my vet but wondered if you had received an answer to this question. thanks gundi3838 |
I don't think it's a vaccination at all. It's probably for a stool sample analysis or heart worm test?. The 1 yr means the vet is suggesting another sample for 1 year. I personally think that's going overboard, if the pet has on heartworm medication. I think this test is necessary before putting a pet on a worm regimen. |
Definitely sounds like a giardia vaccine that is totally unecessary and ineffective. A stool sample would say "stool sample" and would not be anywhere near $52. Heartworm can only be tested through a blood sample. |
Have you tried to contact your vet to ask what the charge is? They should be able to tell you for certain... Where you informed about what vaccines your baby was receiving? |
