Spaying dilema~ need input please OK, here's my situation. Scooter (male) is 15 weeks old. Due to recent heart surgery he will not be able to be neutered for several months, if that. My female, Kay T, is 8 weeks old. I do not plan to breed them since they are related and I absolutely cannot chance a mishap due to Scooter's potential to pass on a heart defect. My question is two-fold: When is the soonest that Kay T can be spayed safely? I want to spay her before her first heat but when do female Yorkies usually have there first cycle? |
I would check with the vets in your area. Around here, no one will spay or neuter until 6 months of age. I remember seeing a post with someone saying that their vet would do it much sooner. |
Some vets spay very young but you shouldn't need to worry about her going into heat til at least 6 months. You should have plenty of time to get her spayed. |
Vets will neutered earlier than 6 months....but only on a larger puppy. Mine won't neuter yorkies until at least 6 months solely because their size. Ramsey was spayed at 6 months and she had never had a heat. The 6 month age is a guessiment...some do and a lot are older. |
a lot of vets still wait until the traditional 6 months but many spay and neuter as early as 8 weeks now. Most here start spaying and neutering between 12 and 16 weeks of age. As long as you have her spayed by 6 months, you should be fine. |

Yorkie females are like human females as there really is no predictive way to know when the first heat will be...that is what the vet told me anyhow. |
