My Mom just got her Yorkies a shot to keep their teeth clean! Has anyone heard of it before? She got their teeth cleaned and the vet told her about a $20 shot that will keep them that way. I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried it. She is absolutely thrilled with the results of their teeth being professionally cleaned. |

hmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds too good to be true. This would make it so you wouldn't have to have them sedated and have that dental once a year (which by the way makes me nervous, not to mention how expensive it is). |
Would LOVE more info on this! |
Coco just had a fractured tooth pulled and her teeth cleaned. They put sealants on her teeth and gave me swabs to wipe on the teeth to keep up the protection provided by the sealants. I thought this was progress... but a shot! Wow, that is progress. Any further information would be appreciated. |
Wow! I have never heard of this, but I sure would like to hear from someone else here who has experience with it if there is anyone! |
Yes, it's a new vaccine and is still being studied. It kills certain bacteria but the problem is, the body should take care of that and the teeth should be brushed everyday. In my opinion, this vaccine isn't needed 99% of the time. It may be useful if the dog refuses to let you near its mouth but still, even with the shot the teeth HAVE to be cleaned. It could be just another drug that can be sold to make $$$. When we start vaccinating against bacteria that is "normal" (or common) are we making a way for super bacteria to form? I think there are better things to vaccinate against. Dogs are way over-drugged already. I highly recommend a product called OraVet for dogs. There are no known side effects and it works great. |
OMG would this be great or what for those babies who refuse to open their mouths for a toothbrush! |

My opinion is that our dogs are being so overvaccinated. It's one thing to give a rabies shot, distemper, and parvo at appropriate times, but so many of these vaccines are not necessary and are given too frequently. This dental vaccine is supposed to be effective against the bacteria that causes periodontal disease in dogs. However, you still must brush the teeth! I'd MUCH rather see an owner brush the teeth a few times a week than give this vaccine. I just dont think the vaccine will be that effective, and I only see it harming dogs in the long-run. For one thing, I think it will give clients a false sense that since their dog had the vaccine they never will need to brush or clean their dogs teeth. And that just isn't the case. The makers of this vaccine even say that regular brushing and professional cleaning will still be needed...so what's the point? I brush my pet's teeth regularly, and I just bought Petzlife gel to apply a few times a week for maintenance. |

:thumbup:.....I would never do this, too many unknowns, too new, I'm will be choosing not to experiment on my little ones....The drug manufacturers are the last place I would go to to get unbiased information on any vaccine..... |
I had heard of this shot, but I thought it was still in the study phases. I didn't realize it had been approved yet. I am sooooo pleased with my boys' teeth. I use Petzlife every night, and it seems to be working great because my vet says they have beautiful teeth.:) |
I've asked 2 different vets about this and they both said it's really experimental and they wouldn't recommend it at this time. I agree we need to have toooo many vaccines already. Also it doesn't keep the teeth clean it just is supposed to protect from certain bacteria the cause decay. I personally will wait and see what happens a few years down the road |
I heard about that a while back and plan on asking my vet about it when mine go in for their annuals |
Neither of us had ever heard of it before. Her vet recommended it and she trusts him completely. I'll have to check out that info. site posted above. |

I have heard about sealants, I am having the girls' teeth done in June so I shall learn more. If there is a shot for $20 only, I am all for it. Sedating them once a year is scary! |
