eeek! rawhides: to chew or not to chew? ok, i've read that yorkies shouldn't chew rawhide treats, so i was avoiding them. well remy was playing with his little papillon friend down the street yesterday and got a hold of one of her rawhide 'Dingo' bones and literally gobbled it up. He is fine but he really seemed to like it--which is odd because he never eats any of the other treats I give him. He always hides them under furniture or between couch cushions-haha:) so, what is the deal with rawhides? are they bad for dogs are am I being psycho and overprotective. do any of your babies get rawhide treats?? |
rawhides are very dangerous to give them.. try bully sticks, or marrow bones. |
really?? Oh GOsh!! Someone on here even recommended me to GET Dingo bones for my pup. shes LOVES them. Why are they bad?? |
when they are chewed, pieces break off and can get stuck in their throats.. they are not digestable. bully sticks (are) digestable... |
wow i didnt know this! where can i get bully sticks? |
any pet store. i order online at e-petsboutique.com. i order in bulk though... i must warn you, they smell, but who cares as long as it keeps my lexi busy, im ok with it... just type in bully sticks and you can see what they look like... i get the 12 inch ones and then i throw them out when they get to be around 4 inches long.. |
My dogs have always gotten raw hides even when I was growing up our dogs always had raw hides. That being said I must also say that dogs should be watched with them. I let my little guys chew the raw hide peices and bones but take them away after they get them down to a size they could choke on. I never let them have them when I am not going to be home. My 90lb lab gets them too but big ones he eats the whole thing. He is 9yrs old and has really nice teeth. no yucky build up, his gums are really good, and I have never brushed his teeth or taken him to the vet for a cleaning. If your dog has had any digestive problems I wouldn't give them raw hides though. |
the deal with raw hides is.. dont take that chance... you just never know.. rather be safe than sorry |

They cant digest rawhides |
I have also heard that Because it get's mushy it get's stuck in there teeth Which will ruin there teeth. I never use them Dog's seem to get very agressive around Them & they don't around the bully stick's. |
I give mine Merrick flossies. They are like like bully sticks but spiral shape. If you get the Merrick brand they wont have any odor at all and wont make their breath smelly. I get mine at PetSupermarket and I think PetCo also has them. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's what the flossies look like-Attachment 215200 and here's a link to flossies and bully sticks Merrick Pet Foods - Dog Treats Tendons |

Aren't These Floosies The Same As Merrick Rollos? Except The Rollos Has The Sausge In Inside The Spiral/ Is This Rawhide Ok To Give Our Babies? |
I don't give rawhides. I give bully stix. |
My friend has a small dashound and she gave him a raw hide which got stuck in his intestines because it didn't get digested, which resulted in major surgery. Like everyone said my dog LOVES the dingo sticks (I think thats what they are) and they come in different flavors, we give him the one for tartar control. Also, my dog loves beggin strips, and they actually make a really big one that they can chew on, its simply a thick bacon strip and I cut it into three parts (cause it is really big even though it says its for small dogs) And I give him that and he loves it. |
Paxton got his first Flossie this afternoon...oh my gosh loved it! :) I actually bought three ....one for Bentley my wire hair fox terrier and one for Cricket and Paxton. Of course the whole evening they have been fighting over the really soft squishy one! They are just like children fighting over one toy! :) |
Rawhides My Tillie almost chocked to death on a rawhide. I didn't know any better and gave them to Tess and Tillie all the time. One night by husband and I were in the kitchen and I heard a funny noise and looked at Tillie and told Bob she was chocking. We didn't know what to do.:2omg: I was having a fit, my son heard the commotion and came out of his bedroom and saw what was going on and he pushed it on down her throat. We tried pulling it out and couldn't get it so he pushed it on down. Scared me and my husband to death, I thought for sure I was going to lose her.:cry2: |
