Worried About Growth of my Puppy Goodmoring everyone: I am really getting woried about my puppy and her growth. She was born 11/29/07. She is approx. 5-months old and weighs between 2.0 and 2.5 pounds never making it to 3.0 pounds in the past months. I was never told by the breeder that she would be this tiny. I cannot leave her unattened for minute as I am afraid she will get hurt. I have thought about selling her, but would be heart sick as I am so in love with her. :( I am concerned about health problems as I have heard small yorkies can have a health problems too. Is it normal for her to be this small and how big will she be? Could she possibly grow larger? Thank you for any help you can offer. |
I can't offer any expert advice but I would be interested to know if she has shown any signs of health problems yet. Do you know how much her parents weighed? Their weight would give an idea of her final weight. |
When I got Milo he was 4 lbs at 6 1/2 months now he is 2 yrs 10 months and 6lb 11 oz she is still a baby she will gain weight is she a good eater. Milo gained most of his weight after I found a food he really loves. |

6 pounds, and dad was 4-1/2 I was told that she was the only puppy from that litter. Can that be correct? She has not shown any signs of health problems other than when I first got her she had some complications after getting shots. She is fine now. I am just so worried about her size as I do have other dogs and children. She has to be constantly watched. And I am always worrying. |

Kash is just over 5 months old and only 2.7 lbs. i've read about a lot of yorkies on YT that are tiny like yours, and they're healthy. sometimes it just depends on the genes. if her parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. have no record of health issues, you should be fine too. i wouldn't worry if she isn't showing signs of being sick or anything. it's normal to worry about her getting hurt though. when Kash plays on the couch, i don't take my eyes off him because i'm afraid he'll fall off unknowingly and get hurt... so far, so good though! good luck, and don't worry so much! :) |

My Sophie is so tiny! I cannot leave her playing anywhere alone. I have to constantly watch her or put her in an area where she will not be harmed. She weighs only 2.0-2.5 pounds and she is almost 8-months old now. She has a double set of teeth that has to be removed, but I am nervous about putting her under anesthesia, because she is so little. I love her dearly and always worry that something is going to happen to her. She is in good health, eats and plays well. I had no idea when I purchased her that she would be so tiny. Anyway, I wish you well with your baby. |

Bile acids tests are easy and inexpensive and will give you some peace of mind. |

She has not not been tested for bile acids. But I will have her checked. And who would have ever thought in a million years a puppy from a mother of 5 1/2 to 6 pounds and a father of 4 1/2 pounds would have had a 2.0 pound puppy. I wonder if those numbers were correct. Anyway, so far she is a healthy baby! Thank you! |

! My little Sofie had her 2nd row of teeth extracted, cleaned, and she was also spayed yesterday. She had a liver profile done as well. The vet said her liver profile was very good. She does not have liver shunt. She is pretty healthy and weighs 2.6 pounds now! She will be 1 year old next month! I questioned the vet about her reaction to the shot earlier in the year and he said you have to extremely careful with little dogs like that. He mentioned that the other vet should not have given her full doses as she is too little. I have found an excellent vet and he knows how fragile these little dogs can be. I am just so happy that she is healthy!! Thank you for your help! |

a month ago he only weighed 1.6 he was very sick with live problems. but with meds and diet he has gained over a pound :) I wish you and your little darling the best :) |
I too have a little one. She was almost a year when she had her retained teeth removed and was spayed. She weighed 2.5 lb then. She is now 1 1/2 yrs old and weighs 3 lb. She gained a whol 1/2 pound after she was spayed. She is very healthy so far too. Not all tiny dogs have health problems |
my baby milu is also very small, she is almost 8 months old and she is 2.6 lbs. i was worried about her health for a long time as well, but she seems very healthy. my vet always assured me that she is a healthy dog and not to worry about her small size. the only frustration i have now is bed time, i can't sleep well, because i am worried that i will crush her, and she is spoiled and won't sleep in her own bed  |
Thank you to everyone who has responded. Bless you and your little ones! :) |

My first Yorkie is under 3 lbs at 6 yrs. She did grow and gain weight steadily so I wasn't scared that she was ill. But I was scared to put her under, but she's had anesthesia twice and done fine. My second is 9 months and well on her way past 3 1/2 lbs and when she gets weighed next, I don't know how much she'll be. They are from the same breeder but only share blood lines through their father. But my smaller one had small parents, 3 1/4 and 3 1/2 lbs. but she is still small compared to them. I hope everything will be fine, did you have liver functions done? |

He has not given her the other shots needed yet, as she had her second teeth removed, and spayed first. He is going to give her 2nd round of shots in a week or so. He said that the small dogs like Sophie cannot have a full dose, as you would give a lab or shepard of the same age. He also said that he would give her a little Benadryl prior to the Vaccinations to help prevent any reaction like before. When he did the surgery he used gas to sedate her and said it is tricky medicating the very small breeds. They did do a liver profile and found her to be healthy. She is a SPUNKY little girl! Thank you & have a great day! |
My Myah is a tiny one too. She is almost 11 months old and is just 3 lbs on a good day. She is a good eater most of the time and is very healthy, just tiny. I do worry about her all the time, but she is worth it!!!!! |
Ok confushed you have her birth date 11 07 |

I worry all the time too about Sophie. I guess just because they are tiny does not mean they cannot be healthy. Sophie thinks she is a big watch dog. ;) I noticed you have a myspace. I do too. I will check your page soon and we can be friends on myspace. Have a great night! :) |
I have been to breeders home where a few of they would have a pup or two that remained small. One breeder had a little girl that was almost 2 years old and weighed only 1lb if that. I have a friend that has a little girl that weighs only 2 lbs and she is over 7 years old. She not had any more than normal health issues. So her size might just be from her genetics, or an underlying problem that may manifest itself with illnesses. Make sure you take her for regular check ups. My 5 month old pup just developed diarrhea ideology unknown, she lost 1 lb in 1 week. I took her to the emergency hospital and they gave her fluids and she received antibiotics, now I am building her back up to normal gradually. With these little ones the loosing of hte weight and dehydration are critical factors inwhich we have to act upon quickly or they can't bounce back quickly. Once she saw me after spending the day at my regulars vet clinic in his hospital facility she wouldn't eat until she saw me. she has been fine except for lingering diarrhea that is clearing up. If you love her you will figure out what is best for both of you. |
