Could use advice..... I recently became the proud new mom of cady a 4yr old yorkie. She is a sweetheart and I love her. She is not house broke, leash trained, use to toys or anything. The vet the woman told me she took her to was mine and they have never seen her. Im worried. I am the 4th home this yr. Im not giving her to any more homes because she has been through enough and I have never had any of these probs. My chihuahua had as a puupy, gracee had came from the shelter with some home training. HELP!!!!:animal-pa:confused: |
Lady was four when I adopted her, too. Congratulations on taking this little girl in. The key is to treat her like a puppy when training her. Keep her confined when you can't watch her with 100% undivided attention. Take her out or to her pads after meals, a nap, exercise and praise her like crazy and give her a treat when she goes. She'll get the hang of it. Lady didn't walk on a leash either. I would go ahead of her and she would take two steps towards me, then sit down. I'd carry her for awhile, then put her down and try again. She got the hang of it pretty quickly, but it was a year before she would walk on grass. Lady didn't play with toys either and still doesn't. The only toys she likes are treat dispensing toys like her Busy Buddy and Twist and Treat. I highly recommend the book Secondhand Dog. It is a must have for anyone who adopts an adult dog IMO. Amazon has it or you can get your local bookstore to order for you if they don't carry it. I agree with ladymom. don't let her out of your site!! As far as the leash goes you could put the other dogs on there leashes too and walk them around the yard and she might fallow. Take her to were the other dogs go potty as she might get the idea faster. It will take a lot longer to train her since she has bad habits already but be patient, be consistent and be positive!! and don't be afraid to use the crate often. Good luck!!!:) |
ladymom gave you really great advice! most important, just be patient with her. just remind yourself that it isnt her fault,and like lady mom said, treat her like a puppy that you are just beginning to train. She probably has no social skills with other dogs, cats, people etc (it sounds like she got absolutely no training atall, and no shots and vet visits). I have a one year old that we are still trying to 100 percent potty train-we take him outside every 2 hours and have a set pee/poop schedule-he is doing good. Im glad you found her and plan on keeping her! post some pics when you get time, we'd love to see her! mel |
