I don't know how much ? I am in trouble,I took Lily to the vet for her itchy skin and the vet yelled at me:(. Lily is now 6 Lb. When I got her 10 months ago she was 1.3LB and the vet said I would be lucky if she ever hit the 4Lb mark, now she is bitting my head off because she is 6Lb:rolleyes: . She gave us 2 months to go from 6Lb to 4.5-5Lb but ideally she wants her between 4 and 4.5 so my poor Lily is now on a diet. I posted this somewhere else with not help, it has been a week since the vet and she has gained .2 So my question is for those of you who feed dry food how much do you feed a day? |
I have one who needs to loose a pound and I just can't seem to get her weight down. I did cut down on treats but I feed wet so I can't help on the amount of kibble. |
My one little boy could stand to lose about a pound and a half. I also feed wet, so I try to increase his exercise. Maybe if you can you can try more walks it does help.:animal-pa |
We have just started daily walks, she has been restricted because of LP recovery. |
You might want to call and talk to a holistic vet, they have more experience with animals dietary needs. Most vets aren't taught much about dog's dietary requirements and the info they do receive is sponsored by the big pet food companies! That's why most vets will recommend certain brands over another. They also have dietary departments at most veterinary schools which you might be able to contact and ask some questions. My Brooke had doubled her weight from 3 lbs to 6 lbs while she was on prednisone. After she got off the steroid I fed her 1/4 cup Innova Evo and about 2 teaspoons of fat free yogurt or cottage cheese. She dropped the weight rather quickly and she is now back down to about 3.5 lbs. Hope you find some help. |
Lily is eating between 1/4 and 1/3 cup of Innova and not many treats. I guess my problem is I fell so guilty, one day she will eat almost nothing a few bites and the next day when she eats she just wants more and I hate to say no she had those I am so hungry eyes :( |
That is quite a bit of weight to put on in 10 months.. I leave food out for my furbutts to eat as they please.. but you need to look for as they grow they need less food.. some people feed the same as when they are tiny babies.. and do not realize they need to cut back as they mature.. anne |
Green Bean Diet!!! :D Sam is a trim 6 pounds and she gets just over 1/8 cup of Canidae twice a day. Plus treats and snacks. ;) It all depends on activity too. Sammy doesn't stop moving... I think her tail even wags when she sleeps. Loki is a couch potato so he has problems keeping weight off. Also you can't base anything on mine because half the time they get canned food or whatever we cook for them... |
Yes it is a big weight jump, my vet said it is not that she is really fat but with her already having lp surgery being over weight a little is bad for her legs not to mention everything else health wise. Lily has access to food all day as well but normally does not eat much till night time. I am not sure how to compare it to how much she ate as a puppy because when she was little it was a job every night trying to force her to eat anything. She did not really start eating on her own regularly till she was spayed and had teeth done at 6 months. |
Perhaps you need to find out the number of calories she needs in a day. Most pup food websites will have the breakdown. Charlie is 11 yo., 9.2 and the vet told me 300 calories. Two months isn't very much time, but it will take a bit longer due to her LP recovery. The extra weight will put too much pressure on her joints. Warmly, Deborah PS Being strong, Momma... |

Oliver is l8mos and eats 1/3 cup per day of Royal Canin Brooklyn is 3 mos and eats 3/8 cup per day:) |
Brylie is 3 months old.....she eats around a quarter cup a day. I hear that if you are supposed to have them on a "diet" to cut back 10% of what they are currently eating....then possibly the next week another 5%. I imagine a small cut-back in food and more excersize she'd drop in weight. I am NO expert....I think I read that somewhere. |
Thanks for all the help |
