recipes? i was wondering if there are recipes specifically for smaller dogs or if any general recipe will work for homemade food. i want to change my doggie's diets from kibble and i was wondering if little dogs require different nutrition than bigger ones. :) does anyone have recipes or know where to find them? Thanks guys! you're the best! |
Hi there I have been consulting an animal nutritionist as my dog has colitis. She told me to give her the following meals: 3ozs minced or finely chopped venison or rabbit or turkey (or fish I cannot give my little one fish as she is allergic to fish, but you can) Half a cup of squash (any kind of squash) Half a cup of green beans chopped up finely Half a cup of potato or rice Brown the meat and cook the veg. Mix it all together with: 1teaspoon of flaxseed oil (or codliver oil is better if your dog is not allergic to it) a measure of a good vitamin supplement for dogs a measure of a good calcium supplement for dogs I think it was Yorkiedaze who gave me an excellent vitamin supplement mixture but my little madam refuses to touch her food if it is on it. I just wish she would eat it, as I think it is a very good mixture. I am sure Yorkiedaze will answer your post and give you her recipes, as will others. I thought would give you mine as my dog is so sensitive but is doing very well on this diet. She is full of energy and has a lovely glossy coat. You can also try carrot instead of squash, but in my dog's case she felt that squash was the best. She said that some dogs can be sensitive to carrot. She told me that beef is too rich for Yorkies and that chicken often causes allergies and so she never recommends it. All wild birds eg pheasant, pidgeon etc can be given to our Yorkies. She feels that venison is the best, closely followed by rabbit then turkey. The above 'recipe' is for a 10lb dog and if your dog is smaller then reduce the quantities. She told me to weigh my dog weekly and if she puts on weight to reduce the potato or rice. If she loses weight then increase the starch. She said to feed her three times a day, so I divide the food into three portions and freeze it in a big batch. I defrost the next day's food overnight. Hope I have been of some help. Luv Franceen |
Oops, I forgot to add the probiotic to the supplement list! She said to add one measure of a good probiotic to her food every day. She said to buy one that has been kept refrigerated in the health shop. She also sells her own at Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care which is a very good one that does not need refrigeration. I am sure you will eventually get some more replies. I have been feeding mine boiled chicken, or turkey, mixed with any combination of sweet potato, green beans ,squash, brown rice . and cooked carrots. There vet says its fine for them, but I have not added any other vitamin yet. Also they like yogurt and one of mine loves most fruit, especially bananas and strawberries. |
thanks so much! i wanted to make sure it was a well rounded diet and these sound great! :) thanks for the tips |
Here is what I mix up for my dogs and I make a big batch and freeze in zip loc bags. This makes enough for all three of my girls for a month, getting 1/4 cup each twice a day. 6 pounds of ground meat (I use 3 pounds of bison & 3 pounds of free range ground beef) you can also use ground lamb. Mix or match as you want. 4 containers of chicken livers 8 large or 10 medium fresh carrots 2 cups rice 1 cup lentils 1 cup split peas 1 bunch of fresh parsley chopped fine (optional) Boil the rice, lentils and split peas together till crisp tender, drain and rinse. Fry meat in dry skillet let cool then chop in food processer. (the liver you may want to chop by hand since it tends to get too "pasty" in the processer. chop fine the carrots. (I use a food processer) boil the rice, lentils and split peas together till crisp tender, drain and rinse. Mix all together and freeze in quart freezer zip loc bags if feeding two or more dogs, or in pint size if feeding one dog. I don't like having it in the ref. for more than four days, five tops. The healthy powder I sprinkle on their food each day is from Dr. Pitcairn's book. I also aids in keeping fleas off. |
