Brief (for once) update on Marrow Bones I started the thread about the marrow bones being so great for their teeth and how hard they are. I just want to update this and tell you that the other day, I noticed some tiny little white pieces where Madison or Max had been chewing on one....they were very very small almost like dust, but they were sharp ended..as if it were minute pieces they'd chewed off the bone. At the risk of sounding like a moron, after singing the praises of these (and only b/c I'd read from other vets that they were safe), I think I'd be very watchful when they're chewing on them or just not give them. I'm so disappointed b/c they really do such a great job on their teeth! With my Madison's GI issues though, at this point, it's just not worth the risk. |
Wow that is suprising that they splintered like that. Did you notice it cause any adverse reactions? I am thinking if the stuff is very small like that it won't do any harm. Next time I go to the vet which I am hoping is soon for Zoey's spay I am going to ask the vet and see if they have any good suggestions for us. |
Dont know !!! oh boy ! You dont know anymore who to believe, my best friend has a little Bischon and she had a vet app. for a checkup (we have the same vet, which i like) and he told her not to give anymore bones, even raw, he said he did several surgerys on dogs (all which where little) because they had sharp little fragmants in their intestines which where punctured !!!:eek: |

Hmmmm. Have you tried the cow hoofs? my dogs have been working on a couple of them for many days and haven't made a dent yet, and they like them. I think they stink! But you gotta have something for them to chew on. |
At this rate they will just have to chew their paws. I don't know what to give anymore. |

well,,i just this past week finally got femur bones from the butcher,, brought them home and boiled them enough to get the marrow out and "stuff" all cleaned off,, and my girls love them and I've not caught one of them gnawing their paws since getting the bones,, and i check the bones daily and see not a mark on them,, I'm staying with the bones until i see a possibility of a problem,, even with Daisy ,, who is a voracious chomper,, there are NO teeth marks on the bone I guess we'll always have pros and cons on everything to do with our "babies" ;) |

WOW! I know you must have been very frustrated when you saw that! Did you inspect the bones to see if the pieces came from the bones? I just wonder if you might have gotten a "bad bone". I, too am very frustrated about what to give to chew. I have almost decided that the only "safe" chewing thing is hubby's fingers and toes :D but I am afraid he will run out of fresh meat if I don't find something else to supplement human fingers/toes :lol tears: |
Well, I just started the raw diet two days ago and my dogs are eating raw chicken bones like pros now. If the bones are not cooked, I would think that would be fine however, I thin the big femur bones are generally not good even for raw fed dogs because they are just too big. Maybe a more experienced raw feeder will come on here and explain. I did switch to the raw for several reasons, one of them being that I am hoping that it will clean my older collies teeth enough that she will not have to have it done by the vet (and she would need to be put under for that). I'm also hoping that with this diet, Zoe will never have a problem. |

Marrow bones (usually the ones vets recommend :rolleyes:) are too dense for teeth. Your dogs should be offered consumable bones from RAW chicken, some pork steaks, etc. Do some research, and learn what is safe. Weight-bearing bones are never safe from large animals. Beef bones usually are, too; so I don't even bother with them. Check links in my sig. |
it figures, i just found the marrow bones at the supermarket, i had to ask the butcher to cut them for me.. lexi loves them but she just tries to get alittle of the meat off them... cant go near her though, almost lost my finger again |

Well, I suppose if you really watch them closely and make sure that there's nothing coming off the bones or teeth marks, they should be ok. It just alarmed me when I saw the little (and they are tiny) shards..I picked a few up (they were on a blanket that's dark green or I probably wouldn't have even noticed them) and they were sharp, which is why I wanted to let everyone know. I think that it was probably Madison who did it, and it IS possible that it was just a bad bone. I guess with him being sick lately, I'm just trying to eliminate any possibilties that might be exacerbating it and I remember reading here about another member's dog, or her vet showing her threads from a rope toy that had balled up in a dog's stomach. Things that you don't notice that are going down and they don't come out! I think I also heard about the little shards puncturing the intestine somewhere, so when I saw this, I felt it was important to let you know at least to be aware. Madison's going to the vet tomorrow morning so I'll ask her about the bones and just see what she's got to say. |
