Not eating regular food Hi, Rufus is now 4 months old, he has decided over the last few weeks that he doesn't like his dog food (dry complete, very good stuff, recommended by the breeder) He is not off food altogether, he eats treats and anything else he can get his paws on! The breeder suggested that I put his food down for twenty minutes then take it away until the next meal time, I tried this but he still wouldn't eat it, he got quite thin so I started leaving the food down, he will eat it eventually or he will eat it if it's fun (I put it in a maze ball and he'll eat it) but it's really messing with his toilet training as he needs to go at odd times. What can I do to get him to eat it from the bowl at normal eating time?? Thanks, Lisa and Rufus |
Is dry complete a brand or? I'm wondering what kind of food he's actually on. Also, if he is a puppy and thin - it may be worth double checking to see if he has worms (just a thought). Canned food is very nutritious and maybe it would be good to mix this with the dry that you're feeding. :) |
The food is called 'Burns' it is a dry complete food with everything that the dog needs, I worm him once a month, last time was two weeks ago. I'm cutting down on the training treats today to see if I can starve him into eating it again (he ate last night but even though I put it down at 6pm he didn't eat it until 9.30pm) I'm not fond of the tinned food, the dry stuff he is on has no additives or nasties and it contains everything he needs (the breeder said it was the best) |
As a breeder, I have tried several different types of puppy food. The one that has been an instant hit with all our puppies over the years has been "Eagle Pass Holistic Select." At four months, he does need hard food, but you should mix some canned foot with it. Also, you might look at changing the hard food ~ we feed our puppies Nutra Natural Choice Puppy food, and they like that also. The Eagle Pass is Puppy Chicken and Oat Bran Formula and it can be ordered online at: Pet Food Supplies Dog Cat Bird ... PetFoodDirect.com. Helen |
