I had pet insurance about 7 years ago on a sharpei I had... Let me tell you what a WASTE of money that was!!! (IMO)
Sage had SO many health problems, and out of all her medical problems, the vet insurance paid for nothing!!! Not one penny!! They had a reason for everything, from genetic, to her coming from a shelter!! So long story short, in the approx. 5 years I carried the insurance, I just paid it and never got anything out of it.. I would NOT recommend it to anyone!! Especially with the genetic problems Yorkies can tend to have, I will guarantee they would not cover any, due to those reasons I described!!
Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it!!!
Good luck with whatever you decide!!!!

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I wonder if they have the same policies. I may call them to see what they say about genetic problems, and see how forthright they will be.

I recently got pet insurance for chester pets best out of boise idaho, they cover older pets, and their coverage was one of the best. Theyn do not cover any knee stuff considered genetic, and I have heard that VPI pet insurance covers different preices for different things. Pets Best covers 80% period.

I have VPI and it doesn't cover genetic problems. I opted for the wellness plan that's a little more expensive (my premium is 36.00 and change monthly). This plan covers 2 annual exams, a portion of shots and flea meds.

I took Basil for shots & flea meds a few weeks ago and had a 162.00 bill. VPI covered 124.00 of it, so I was pleased.

I haven't had to use it for anything major yet (thank goodness), but I'm happy with it so far.

After looking over all of the pet insurances, I opted for the ASPCA pet insurance. I can't remember the specifics, as it was a while ago, but I know it fit my needs the best. For me, not getting it wasn't an option. The cost of living here soooooo outrageously expensive. Spaying alone at a vet clinic is $695 bucks. Goodness knows if something unexpected were to happen, I wouldn't want to be caught not being able to afford treatment. But again, this is just my particular situation. Everywhere else we've lived is waaaaaay cheaper in terms of Vet bills (as is, of course, COL). Once we move from here, we probably won't need the insurance anymore. I've had pets all my life & we've never needed it until we moved here.

I have it on my 3 yorkies. I have VPI. They do not cover genetics or hereditary and of course 2 of mine had big bills for both. I pay 60 a month for all 3 and I have come out way ahead on Cali, who had over 7000 in bills the first year I had her, VPI paid about 2000. And every year I get about 200 back out of 400 or so in bills for her due to her allergies etc. Pixie I used it twice with and on about 600 in bills i got back about300 or so. I have not used it on Roxie, Thank God. I just wan to be sure I can afford any major illnesses or accidents shoud they happen. I know people say put the money away and your better off but I feel safer with it. JMO

OK

Ok, so im on the fence as to whether or not its worth it. The payment would be 19.95 a month for the premium plan. So i will weigh the pros and cons.

Has anyone heard of Embrace Pet insurance? Any experiances (good & bad)? Thanks

I also have VPI for my two Yorkies. I've already made quite a bit of money back from it! It covers a percentage of vaccines, office visits, medication and neuter/spay, and plenty of other things (though as many others noted, not genetic problems). I have the standard plan, I think. I'm not 100% sure. The main reason I got it though, is that I worry about some crazy accident happening to my furbabies and not having the money help them!

Gracie2006 05-02-2008 07:41 PM

I have VPI for both girls. The standard plan for Gracie and the standard plus wellness coverage for Holly. It paid about $90 of Holly's spay and microchip, nothing for the removal of her baby teeth. Just remember, insurance is not a pre-paid health plan. It is there to help out if something major happens, and if you get the wellness plan, it will help out with vaccines, dental, spay/neuter etc. I don't know how long I will be able to afford to cover both girls, it is very expensive.

I have ASPCA pet health insurance for Bella. My vet suggested it said it covered more than others. The Premier policy costs about 62.00 per month. I just summited a claim for $348.00 for baby teeth pulled, spayed, revolution, vaccinations, etc. The only problem I have so far is their claims process is running 3-4 weeks behind.

okay, here is a question... don't you have to pay the bill in advance, then get reimbursed the charges? I have always heard it is better to put the money that you would spend on insurance into a savings account so that you have that money up front just incase. By paying the monthly premium it would be hard to save the extra for the initial expense. I might be wrong on this and wanted it clarified before I invested my money in the insurance. I also heard that they do not cover alot and people has lost money. I was really interested in the VPI until I heard this. Let me know if you know any different. Thanks!!!

I was checking into petsbest insurance and it even says that it covers pre-existing conditions. I have not checked out the website or rec'd a quote but I rec'd a brochure from the holistic vet we saw a couple weeks ago.

I know for us we have spent close to 8,000 since last June. For a while there we were at the vet every saturday with a 300/400 bill.

I have 2 yorkies and we needed to get decided to get current labs . We went to a specialist a few weeks ago and for 2 complete blood panels, 1 urinalysis, 1 bat and 2 UPC checks it was 1054.00- that was a little unexpected as we thought it would be closer to 700.00 or so. I still got a little weak in the knees while writing out the check. Unreal how quickly things add up...

we boycotted our vet and until we find a new one that I can trust we have to see the specialist. One of these days i do plan on looking into petsbest. Although it does make sense to just put aside money every month into a seperate account so that it's there when you need it.
