K/D or L/D: Lesser of two evils for Liver compromised puppy
 
Ok, the vet is telling me that the L/D food has more protein than the K/D food, so that is NOT what they recommend. However, the K/D, which they recommend, contains liver, which is supposedly not good for a liver-compromised dog either. So which one do I chose?

L/D canned.
L/D kibble has ethoxyquin in it which is not good for any dog.
K/D is not the best choice. I think it has pork in it and liver isn't good for the liver...

L/D canned is still very low in protein.
In fact, it could be debated that none of these are good and that your dog should get more protein, even with a liver problem, then any of these provide.
It depends what vet you talk to, so I wouldn't want to go much lower than the L/D.

I would NOT use K/D canned or kibble or L/D kibble.

I would not use K/D..On the liver shunt group, we have had several dogs (including my own) seizure on low protein foods like K/D, U/D, etc. because of the pork liver. Pork liver is absolutely one of the worst things you can give a liver compromised dog. L/D canned is the best choice out of the Hill's products...it does not contain pork liver. Also, L/D contains higher amounts of certain vitamins and minerals like vitamin E and zinc which liver compromised dogs need and also reduced amounts of vit and min that they need less of like copper.
It's not only important to look at the amount, the TYPE is just as important :)

According to the K/d dry food package, it contains only chicken liver flavor, no pork liver. Could it have changed? I also have a recipe for home cooked low protein food, which I will make.

I use the L/D for my yorkie who had liver shunt. This is what they recommended to feed her and it works for her.

I was not referring to the dry k/d, I was referring to the canned k/d which does contain pork liver. The dry food variety of Hill's products should not be fed because they contain ethoxyquin which is a carcinogen (cancer-causing).

I can't figure out why the majority of vets recommend this brand and why a supposed nutritionous endorses this food. The packaging info touts it as nutritious and vet recommended. Makes me wonder about vets!

In vet school, they typically spend very little time on nutrition. Nutrition is a completely different field.
If you don't want to go with a Hill's product, Royal Canin makes a food called Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 which is also specifically for liver compromised dogs. Almost every dog that I have known has loved this food and NO ethoxyquin.
