fungus on yorkie? The breeder we are buying our yorkie from said the puppies have a fungus they are being treated for. It is like athlete's foot in humans she said and from the treatment they all have a little patch of fur missing. does anyone know about this? |
It could be mange or ringworm. |
is that bad? should we not get the puppy/ |
Both can be treated with medicine just fine. Is this breeder reputable? if they are reputable I would think getting a puppy is okay as long as the condition is treated properly. |

I'd most likely move along to another puppy... my oldest cat had ringworm as a kitten when i got her from the breeder and to this day she is a carrier. doesn't normally show signs of it unless her immune system is suppressed. |
ringworm (fungus) Oh my gosh. I bought Maxi in January @ 12 weeks old and found she had fungus. She has been treated for ringworm for about two months now with fulvacin. It is a liquid that costs about $75.00 per bottle and I have bought 4 of them and she still has it. I caught it from her and so did my other dog. It doesn't affect their health unless they get a secondary infection. It is very contagious. I wash the floors with bleach water and the spores can live for a very long time in the carpet. Puppies are most likely to get it. It is not a worm but a fungus. I hope the seller takes into concideration what you will be investing in treatment for the new puppy. My breader didn't acknowledge she had it when I purchased her but her spots were small at the time and I couldnt see them untill I really looked. It has been a real headache, but I love her and am hoping for the day when she has a full coat of fur and the bald spots and scaling are gone. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork Maggie, Maxi and Vea |
well we aren't going to pick up the puppy for 5 more weeks. they are only 5 weeks old now, and the breeder said she would understand if we didn't want to get him anymore. But I really want this little guy. she said she is treating them. |
It sounds like ringworm to me, too. As hard as it may be to do, I'd pass on this puppy. |
My first vet tested mine for ringworm and thank goodness it wasn't but the treatment was for a very long time and could involve the liver. Also, it can be passed to humans and other animals. You must be very deligent in cleaning and disinfecting everything otherwise it can keep resurfacing. The treatment was at least 2 mos long and she told us that the pups needed to have mos of clean results before they are considered cured! |
I got Brooke when she was 5 months old and 2 weeks after I got her she came down with ringworm! She gave it to me and my 2 chihuahuas! As the other posters have said, it took like 2 -3 months to get rid of and there were many baths, stinky sulfur dips and medicines plus many trips to the dermatologist. It is contagious so you have to keep the dog at home during this whole time. If you get this pup at 10 weeks, he may not be through with the treatment and then you will not be able to socialize him correctly because he still will be contagious. I had to wait until Brooke and the other's had no more spots and then 2 weeks after that we were allowed to go outside. Just keep this in mind if you still decide to go ahead and get him. Whatever you decide, I wish you well. :) |

I have been using several things to treat this. The shampoo I got from my vet: Photoclens by Ayuvet from Tomer Labs - you can buy it directly from them natural herbal treatment - tomer laboratories - natural quality herbal remedies -- this shampoo is wonderful - the dogs smell wonderful & their coats are beautiful, I may keep using this from time to time once I know for sure the condition is all gone. Here is what I found about the ingredients oils of Himalayan cedarwood Cedarwood Himalayan Essential Oil, Cedarus Deodora Eucalyptus leaf oil Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Eucalyptus globulus I am also using the tree tea oil and Lotrimin on a regular basis - we have had major improvements & new hair growing - on noses, ears, and paws Good luck making a decision. Has the breeder dealt with this before? Can you wait & make a decision after or if it clears up? I would recommend finding out the medical name & consulting with your vet about the condition. |
