Rotating food
 
Franklin is starting to get a little bored with his food so I want to change it. I figured I could change it every 4-6 months, using 3 or so different brands. Simply for some variety.

I did a search about this and found mixed opinions so I wanted to ask again. What do you guys think? Do you think it's a good idea to change foods that often? Does it make them picky?

Also. The feed store I buy Franklin's food at is closing so I have to drive like 30 minutes to get his food now. I want to switch to something I can find closer. Petco has Avoderm, Nutro Ultra, Solid Gold, and Natural Balance. I'm leaning towards the Solid Gold or Natural Balance. Which would you recommend?

I would not recommend Avoderm because of the avocado in it. When they say to switch food they mean switch to foods with different ingredients. Solid Gold and Natural Balance have different types. You could switch to a lamb and rice for awhile and then go to a chicken and rice or maybe a bison flavor. I think sometimes they do get picky. I have tried Solid Gold and Natural Balance both and mine always seem to prefer Canidae All Life Stages. Sometimes I will use the Canidae Lamb and Rice for awhile. None of mine like any of the fish based dog foods. You could also look into buying from Pet Food Direct. With the price of gas being what it is, it might be simpler to have it shipped to your house. Let us know what you do and how Franklin likes the different foods.

I don't know. I've heard from 2 different vets and the trainer at Petsmart that you should switch their food because, they thrive off of consistently. They said most people fell bad about them eating the same food everyday and want to change the food but, it could end up hurting the dog. Changing food too often can mess their stomach up and cause diarrhea and votmitting, too. I don't know how true that is but, I thought I'd share what I heard. Hope someone else has more information for you though.

the reason being is that they are less likely to develop an allergy to a protien if the food is rotated with a different protien. It also gives them a change in flavor and makes them less sensitive to sudden food changes. I always mix the food 25%, 50%, 75%, then all new food. This also helps with the transition and less likely to cause any problems. I rotate the Timberwolf foods. If you purchase from their website they offer free shipping. Right now they are on the Ocean Blue which is grain free. With the variety they offer, it is great for rotating. You don't have to rotate between brands, just protien sources. You could rotate all Natural Balance or Rotate between the Solid Gold and the Natural Balance. Good Luck!! In my opinion, it is better to rotate!!

I think I'll look and decide between Solid Gold and Natural Balance next time I'm at Petco. Then I can rotate between protein sources.

When switching foods, would it be easier on their stomach to just switch to another type of food from the same company instead of switching brands all together.

For example: i currently feed Merrick's Pot Pie. Should I switch it up to another Merrick's brand or something different?

I think it's easier to switch to another protein source from the same company.

So if I do that, do I still need to introduce it gradually?

I also rotate Timberwolf Organics, with a little Canidae ALS thrown in. Since you use Timberwolf, did you know that they changed their formulas? I just found out the other day when I read Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble. The review considers their new formulas inferior to their originals. Not happy to hear this because I really like this food. Anyway, thought you'd like to know. The link is below.

Yes, I knew that the formulas had changed, yet I still feel they are superior to other foods. I have to drive so far to get decent food, so I take advantage of the free shipping that Timberwolf offers. Their coats are great, stools great and they love it. What more can you ask out of a food? I know it is not for every pup though and always recommend other premium brands that they can try also. I also always recommend rotating protiens. Are you still happy with Timberwolf?

I use Foster & Smith's food. It comes in a chicken and brown rice and a lamb and brown rice formula. I just rotate flavors with every bag. All mine eat very well and show no upset with the switching. They get just dry in the morning and dry mixed with some canned (pedigree lamb and vegetable or chicken) in the evening. Works well for me. :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:)
