Blood test gone bad? I brought Lulu to the vet this morning to get some bloodwork done. We have only went to this particular vet a couple of times & he seems nice & I've only heard good things about him so I was thinking I would let him do the spay within the next couple of months. He drew the blood, but once the needle came out there was quite an amount of blood & she now a dark red bruise at the site. Well I've had many blood tests done in the past on the girls & have never had one where the dog bleed afterwards. My question is can this sometimes happen or is it that the blood test was done incorrectly? Any thoughts? Thanks! |

I think the bleeding is okay. I'm not with Ellie when she gets blood drawn, so I don't know if she bleeds. The bruise is very normal. Ellie gets one almost every time because she is so wiggly. As long as the bruise goes away within about a week, no worries.:) |
Brooke has to have blood drawn monthly and they do it through the jugular in the neck. Sometimes she bleeds more than others and sometimes she get a bruise too!! I always wondered why they kept taking it from her neck. The vet tech said that if you keep taking blood from a leg, the veins are so small there that you could collapse them with continued use and then you won't have a vein to use when you have an emergency and need an iv placed! That's pretty normal and doesn't mean they necessarily did anything wrong. I myself have had blood taken from my arm, and sometimes I bruise a little and sometimes I don't. When Lacy had blood taken last she had no bruise at all, but my cat bruises badly everytime she has blood taken. Usually what they will do to reduce bruising is put pressure at the site as soon as they take the needle out...you try to put pressure on it for a couple minutes afterwards. |
Sometimes when drawing blood from people that can happen, so maybe it's the same with dogs. I hope she's o.k though. |
Thank-you all for your response & concern. She's doing fine, just a really bad bruise but she isn't bothered by it. I guess some blood tests can be worse than others - I still can't get over how much blood came out after the test - all over the technician's hands - Lulu's white collar is now stained red but once they applied pressure it stopped. My husband mentioned that he did see her wiggle a little as the vet was removing the needle - maybe that had something to do with it. Guess I'm just looking for a really good vet to do the spay & I was thinking if he couldn't do a blood test right then I wouldn't want him to do the spay - oh I just worry so much these little ones & am dreading spay day : ) Thanks again - this is the best group ever!!! |
Since they use the jugular it can happen that they bleed a lot. |
she shouldn't have bled like that. Its not her fault. Its the technicians fault. She should have put her finger on the hole as she drew out the needle and then held it there for a minute or two to prevent bleeding and bruising. Sometimes bruising happens if the animal squirms a lot or jumps but there should be no reason for her letting your dog bleed all over the place. i wouldn't trust her. |
Personally, I would look to another vet to spay your pup. Even if they do wiggle, there shouldn't be blood that is visible to the eye. Charlie has a new vet, numerous blood draws in his neck and no bruising. You need confidence in the vet who will operate on your pup. Otherwise, meet and greet until you are satisfied.
