Xylitol Warning Just wanted to let everyone know about a danger to all dogs. My dog Ceasar ate some sugarfree gum. I wasn't concerned at first, but called the vet about two hours later because I wasn't sure how he would pass it. She asked me if Xylitol was on the ingredient list. I said yes. She said I needed to bring Ceasar in immediately. Apparenty Xylitol is toxic to dogs. I had NO idea. It causes sudden blood sugar drops and can cause kidney and liver failure. Luckily our Ceasar pulled through after a few days of constant care. This is a fairly new finding over the past few years. Xylitol is found in lots of sugarfree products. I had never heard of this before and have since told every pet owner I know. Most dogs that ingest this are not as lucky as Ceasar, especially little dogs. It doesn't take much. Hope this information prevents others from going through what we did. If you google xylitol poisoning in dogs you can find additional information. |
I wonder if sugar free popcycles have Xylitol:confused: |
I'm glad your little Ceasar is ok now after eating that. :):aimeeyork What a scare you must have had. My daughter has Diabetes and when she's here @ home during her school breaks, there are sugar free foods around here that normally aren't. I knew about the Xylitol but that is such a good reminder/information for all us small doggie owners. :) |
To be safe I check the ingredient list on any sugarfree products brought in the house. In our case the gum was in our car. I still feel guilty about what happened to Ceasar but I had no idea about the Xylitol at the time. |
you shouldn't allow them to have any sugar free products. especially splenda. |
I am so glad to hear that Ceasar is okay. Thank you for posting about this. I had no idea about xylitol. Just another reason I'm so glad I have YT to keep me informed! |
