Need Information About Neutering Yorkies I have searched the Internet and cannot find information about neutering specific to Yorkies. I believe I read somewhere that they should receive gas (Iso) anasthesia rather than IV. Is there anything else? One vet does the gas anasthesia but not an IV drip during surgery. Is that OK? The vet we used when we had our Maltese doesn't use gas anasthesia but rather IV. Should I avoid them? |
That should be "anEsthesia." |
Your vet should use Isoflourine gas as an anesthesia. If it is for a routine neutering only you can requests that your Baby get masked only but if he needs to pull teeth they will need to tube him. (that's putting the tube down the throat) because they need access to the mouth. Most vets need to induce with an IV injection of a tranquilizer first. Some vets have an induction chamber (Like a fish tank) That they pump the ISO gas into. Either method is ok just make sure they use Isoflourine. (My baby goes to get neutered a week from thursday :( ) |

Isoflurane or sevoflurane anesthesia should be used. The vet may need to use an injectable drug like propofol to induce. Some dogs are masked down with Iso but I'd go with what your vet is comfortable with because this practice is sometimes left for only older or unhealthy dogs who seem to tolerate Iso best. Even if your vet masks down with Iso, your dog needs to be intubated to hold the airway open. This also makes the risk less severe if the pet throws up. An IV is not a option, in my opinion, but a requirement. What if something were to go wrong during surgery and a drug needed to be administered via IV? It would take too long to put one in. Surgery should be done on a heated surface because toy breeds lose body heat so easily. |
The vet I formally saw when we had our Maltese is going to do the neutering. She charges $160, and that includes the blood work, anesthesia, and pain medication. Logan will be injected with something to initially put him under, then he will be intubated and the gas used. I'm going to have it done next Tuesday. I will let you know how it goes. |
