8 week old pups with loose stool I have two litters of 4 pups each, 8 & 9 weeks old. They were eating dry kibble supplemented with chicken. About 10 days ago I ran out of their regular Foster&Smith puppy kibble and I substituted Wellness puppy kibble for a few days until I could get a shipment of Foster & Smith. It has been a nightmare of loose stool around here during this period. Their stool looks like a liquified version of their kibble. I tried feeding pumpkin yesterday and it seemed to help some of the pups temporarily. They are not acting sick, still very active, chasing each other and wrestling. It's just the constant mess and I don't know when I should start to get worried...Help, anyone, please? |
Welcome to YT, first of all! :D At that age, I'd be worried right away - as puppies can get into danger after day 1 with diarrhea. It could be coccidia, giardia or other things. I would get them to the vet asap for fecal tests. Even though they're still active - what can happen with puppies is that they're fine, and then *boom*, they're not. Can you get a fecal sample to a vet right away tomorrow morning? I would also recommend BeneBac from a petstore immeditately, you could also give canned white mashed potatoes tonight (take the food away). |
So, have they had diarrhea for 10 days or a few days? |
with them being puppies and the sudden food change its hard to tell which is the culprit. I'd take a few samples of their poo to the vet for a fecal test. Also take away the wellness kibble and feed them....well i'd say chicken and rice for an older dog but i don't know if thats enough for 8 week olds. maybe someone else will have a better idea. |
Thanks everybody... Thank you all for replying. It's been intermittent for about 10 days, coinciding with the food changes--Foster& Smith to Wellness back to Foster &Smith, and it's not every puppy affected. Also, being 4 to a pen, it's hard to tell exactly which ones have the problem... During this period the older ones have been to the vet for checkups and shots, nothing unusual noted. I've been breeding a long time and never had anything like this. I will send a specimen off to the vet today, but I'm much more suspicious of their food than of coccidia, etc., and wonder if anyone else has seen or heard of anything going on with those brands. Thanks again, Belinda |
