Question About Teeth Today I noticed on my 19month male that one of his upper K9's is partly grey. All of his other teeth are pearly white and have almost no tartar buildup whatsoever (thanks to the Pfizer dental vaccination). The tooth in question is hard, not loose, no visible chips or cracks, the enamel is still very shiny and it appears to not be causing him any pain. There is a canine "dentist" in the east bay and I made an apt but I cant get in for another 2 weeks--the wait is killing me. I cant figure out for the life of me what happened. I don't allow him to chew on anything hard that could potentially hurt his teeth. The only thing I can think of is that he LOVES to play tug of war with his toys. My husband and I try not to allow it but I am always catch him hanging from a toy in my Dobermans mouth(who he uses as his toy holder for his tug of war games) :D . Could tug of war have caused this? Has anyone had a similar experience? Is this something I should be as concerned as I am about? Thanks in advance for your help! |
It's so difficult not to worry - but if he is still eating and/or chewing/playing with toys, then at least you know he is using his mouth/teeth/jaw enough that he's not in too much pain to prevent that - so try not to beat yourself up, okay? :) Tug of war is, from what I understand, actually very good for them bc it exercises their neck/jaw and if they use rope toys - it flosses as well. Please update if you can, hang in there! :D |
I know human teeth can get discolored dark when the nerve had died. I don't think it would be hurting him just looks different. Keep us posted |
So we just got back from the consultation with the dental specialist and it looks like he needs a root canal. He has surgury planned for Wednesday. They say since the nerve is dead if the tooth is left as is it will likey fracture and cause a massive infection in his mouth. Right now a root canal is our only option. The only thing they can think that caused this is somehow the nerve in his adult tooth was damaged when they extracted his puppy k9. I cant pull the tooth because he is still working on his CH but most importantly k9's are like little fingers for dogs--they use them to grab and pick up things. All I can hope for is a quick and easy surgury and a speedy recovery. Thank you all for your support! :animal-pa |
