I'm getting worried **updated My poor puppy's cough has just been getting worse. It's almost an all day thing now and when she does it- she REALLY hacks. Sometimes it sounds like that goose honk but other times is just a dry hacking and at the end of it it sounds like she got whatever it was out of her throat. WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER??!!!??! I am so worried that she has a collapsed trachea, please help me :( undefinedWell, I took Ava to the vet this am and sure enough, its KC. The vet gave us antibiotics and some cough medicine that also has a throat medicine in it to help with the pain in her throat from so much hacking. So thanks for all your help, i really appreciate it!! It calmed me down a whole lot! She'll be fine :) |

yep my brownie had it when he was a baby and thats exactly how i would have described it deff take her to the vet its not good if it gets worse |
The incubation period from the time a dog is exposed until clinical signs appear varies depending on which infectious agent is the cause. In general it appears to be about 3 to 5 days with Bordetella. The infection tends to be mild except for a very harsh cough that often prompts owners to think that their dog "has something caught in his throat". In some dogs it can lead to pneumonia or more serious signs. Cough suppressants can be used to control the cough and antibiotics may be necessary for stubborn infections or to try to stop the spread of the bacteria in multiple dog households. It is probably a good idea to vaccinate dogs who will be exposed to large numbers of other dogs, such as at shows, obedience classes or the classic cause -- when left in kennels. The intranasal vaccine is pretty fast acting, providing some protection in as little as 5 days. The injectable version of the vaccine may provide longer immunity, though. Some vets use both to get maximum protection. We don't use either one routinely but give the intranasal vaccine to our patients who will be exposed to groups of dogs. |
Thank you!! |
yup it is kennel cough................. toby had it too...... the vet didnt give him anything for it because he didnt have any secondary infections .... does she have a nasal discharge(yellow or green)? are her eyelids puffy? if she has these than she has a secondary infection and needs to be put on antibiotics,...... youre vet MIGHT give you a perscription for cough surpressant but if he doesnt than you could use a little bit of children robitusin (cough and cold formula) and that shoulda help to keep the inflamation of the throat down so youre baby doesnt cough AS MUCH as before, it does get really bad for a while (and i remember staying up at night because it was so loud) but it isnt that big of a deal unless she has a secondary infection..... the attitude on this subkect is to leave it alone unless it has one of these............ keep us posted and if you cant get into the vet because of MLK jr day, than try the robitusin it should help :) |
