Changed Food & Now he Eats his Poo After the whole pet food recall, I switched Otis to Nature's Variety raw food diet about nine months ago. He eats two medallions in the morning, two in the evening, a total of four a day as recommended by the manufacturer. He loves the food, has NEVER gotten sick from it. In fact, he seems like a different dog...more energetic and peppy. But now he's eating his poo. He started doing this about two weeks ago. At first I couldn't confirm it, but sure enough, this morning Otis was caught red-handed eating his poop. He gets a multivitamin every morning along with a glucosamine pill, and various treats throughout the day, so I don't think he's lacking any nutrients. He has never behaved like this. He's 8 years old. In fact, one time Otis refused to get in his carrier because there was a small piece of poopie in it, so I know he knows it's dirty. So how do I stop this, and what is causing the problem? :confused: |
Well, THIS is one for the books!! Usually, as you're probably well aware, poos from raw-fed dogs are tiny, hard, super-dry, and almost powdery - so I'm surprised there is anything "attractive" that makes him want to dive in. Hmmm...well, has the consistency of his poos changed at all? Are they more smelly, voluminous than usual or anything? If so, then I wonder if a) is he not absorbing everything or b) is he getting into anything at all? You do mention various treats - so I wonder if those are moving through partially undigested - and making his poos appetizing. Wylie went through this when he was eating kibble (now on NV) - I bought Solid Gold's S.E.P. (stop eating poop), used it for a month, he never ate poo again. I've heard of others sprinkling meat tenderizer and it supposedly accomplishes the same type of thing. :) |
Meat tenderizer didn't help us when Winky was eating poop, but I have heard good results from that from some members. We basically watched him when he TRIED to eat his poop, and sternly told him NO when he attempted it. Nothing else we tried really worked to stop poop eating. We think he's grow out of it now, err, we pray that he has... |
