3-pound Yorkie getting neutered next week Logan is 8 months old and weighs 3 pounds. We are going to get him neutered next week. The vet will use gas anesthesia. Does anyone else with a small Yorkie have a neuter experience they could share with me? |
good luck.. You should be fine... my friend had her female fixed when she was just 2 and a half pounds and she did good , excellent acctually, she had a little humbical hernia and they fixed both things together... she bounced right back.... have no lue if they used gas or what but you can ask... i hope someone else knows more about this to help you out... i am sure there is a different anesthettic to small dogs, i remember my vet said something to me about that when i got mine fixed. |
I'm sure he'll be fine. Just be sure to do blood work beforehand. :) |
I got my 3 lb chihuahua, Bitsy and my 3 1/2 lb yorkie, Brooke spayed at the same time. I waited until Brooke was 1 yr and I felt like that was as big as she was going to get and Bitsy was 3 1/2 yrs old. I was very nervous about the surgery but I found a vet that has spayed rats and my girls are definatly bigger than rats!! My vet is at an animal hospital that allows you anywhere in the facility, so I was able to be in the operating room and I watched both surgeries. In fact, Brooke had to have some baby teeth removed also. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to be able to watch but I wanted to try. It was very interesting and I was able to be there for them when they came to and were in recovery. They came through really well. It is easier for them to do boys, just make sure that the vet is used to doing small animals and I am sure you will do fine. My vet didn't put any instruments into them, she only cut about a 1/2" opening that she could put her finger in and pull the organs out. Hope this helps, relax and everything will be O.k. for your little man! |
Don't worry! My little guy only weighed 3lbs when he was neutered. I was so worried, but he was just fine! He came back from surgery being his great little old self. Also, my sister is a urologist, and she says that the surgery is really minor, and not a big deal at all. |

I am really scared to get Jacoby neutered...we have an appointment for blood work next week. |
Princeton got neutered at 3lbs and did very good. I had to make sure he did not jump up and down off the couch and rip his stitches. He had lots of energy the second day. Don't worry he will do fine! |
My Marcel was under 3 lbs. when he was neutered - scary - so I know how you feel. His surgery (including teeth pulls) took about 45 minutes! He was tired, but totally fine when he got home, ate fine - snapped back next day like nothing ever happend. Unreal! So, they really do recover surprisingly fast. |
Thanks for all the replies. The appointment is next Thursday. I will let you know how it goes. First, though, I want to call some other vets to see what they charge for the procedure. With our last dog, the vet charged only $40. This vet is charging us over $300. |
wow that is pretty expensive....does that $300 include the blood work? |
I thought I posted a follow-up to this subject, but I don't see it. The vet we used when we had our Maltese is going to do the neutering next Tuesday, the 22nd. They will do blood work before the surgery. The total, including the blood work and pain medication, will be $160, which is much better than the $336 which didn't include blood work. |
