Butt dragging - health issue?
 
I've caught my boy Raja dragging his bottom on our beautiful wood floors :eek: the past 2 days. It's not constant, just 2-3 times each day. I keep his bottom trimmed up and checked for "dingleberries" (sry if this is offensive language to anyone :) ) but it's clean & bare. I wondering if this might be compressed anal sacs or whatever it's called? Are there any visual clues that it could be this condition? Nothing looks swollen but I don't know what to look at or for. I need to go to the vet anyway for more heartworm meds but I could move the appointment up if it sounds like I need to.

If you want to talk poop, let's talk poop. No ifs, ands, or butts (:rolleyes:). Seriously, don't be shy about this - stuff. What comes out the other end are important clues to what's going on health-wise. He really shouldn't be dragging this much - what are you feeding? :)

I would have the vet check your baby's anal glands. They may need
to be expressed is all.
I have never done it but other's have. Since your going to the vet's
just have him do it if necessary.

Well the stuff coming out of the other end has been firm & normal. I'm feeding Stella & Chewy's Beef Steaks, Merrick canned, raw chicken (necks, backs, feet), and an occasional raw steak whenever us humans are having it. I usually try to give something different each day for variety and nothing about their diet or eating schedules has changed in 6+ months.

I hoping it was just an itchy bottom... I gave him a bath earlier today so we'll see if that helps. No butt dragging today so far, though!

We just had that problem with Murfee. I took him to the vet and had his anal glands expressed. The vet said they were full and thick:confused: :confused: After an immediate bath:eek: he was ok for a couple of days and then started over again so I took him back. His glands were empty but she said that sometimes they still itch so he got an "allergy" shot. That seemed to do the trick. Good luck.

Hmmm...well, it'll be interesting to see if the vet thinks they need to expressed. What kind of Merrick canned? I feed raw - so I suppose if it were me, I'd probably do an elimination diet and perhaps steer away from the traditional meats for awhile. Instead, I'd probably go with lamb and venison for a good month and see if things cleared up.

Obviously, something is irritating his system....is the pollen high right now in your area? I know it is in mine, and sometimes that can throw everything just *off*. I do hope he feels better.

Haha I love that show.

Marley does the same butt dragging thing sometimes, no idea why.

Maybe cause she can't reach it with her paw,lol!! Check to see if her anal sac's are full otherwise it is just an itch probably.

Anal glands is the first thing I would check then has he been wormed recently If those two are a yes,I would speak with my vet if it continues

All different kinds of Merrick cans - their favs are Wingaling and Smothered Comfort but those are hard to find bc everyone snaps them up quickly I guess. I usually pick up 6-8 different flavored when I go to stock up, but they've had no new kinds lately and nothing they're eating has ever bothered him before. :confused:

Maybe it is allergies making his bottom itch... he had a strange cough last year and his vet told me to give Children's Benadryl. It stopped so I stopped giving it to him long ago... I'll just have to see what the doc says. There was bottom biting 2-3x yesterday but none so far today.

Have his stool checked for worms and also let the vet check the anal glands.
Food allergy would not likely be the cause.

If you want to learn how to empty anal glands...
 
There really isn't anything to it. ky jelly and a latex glove is all you need.
Here is a link that shows you where the glands are located.

It seems gross at first but you are helping your dog in the best way if he is scooting, he is uncomfortable until the glands are emptied.

My Joey had this problem for while. The vet showed my how to express the glands, I would check him before his bath to see if the anal glands were bulging. If they were not expressed about every 3-4 weeks he started scooting. Around a year of age he stopped scooting and hasn't needed any help with his anal glands for about 7 months. So some do "outgrow" this condition. Have your vet show you how, it's very important to do it correctly.
