Jogging With Yorkie? Is it safe to take my Yorkie jogging with me? I do not jog for more than two or three miles and my Yorkie has so much energy I feel like she would be fine but I wanted to see if anyone else jogged with their Yorkie and if it was safe before I attempted it. I figure if she couldn't handle it I could pick her up and walk home with her. Thanks for your advice! |
I feel you on the SSOOOO much energy part. If my boy doesnt get enough energy he is harassing everyone with every squeaky toy he owns in a perpetual game of fetch... :D When we go for walks they have to be enough to tucker out my Yorkie and my Doberman which isnt an easy feat. We usually do a daily 3mi walk and mix it up with brisk walking, jogging and short bursts of running. By the time we get home both are tired. I would say the safety of it really depends on your dog. A 3mi jog may be a little too hard on her but if you incorporate some jogging to your regular routine I think she would probably love it. Both my dogs are also treadmill trained. In the event that it rains my Yorkie will burn off steam on that. I just sit on the floor next to him reading a book (never leave a dog on a treadmill unsupervised). My boys actually LOVE their treadmill--if they could figure out a way to turn it on themselves they would! :p |

Wylie has jogged w/ hubby and me before - he LOVED it; we went for about 1/2 hour and he was just bonkers happy. Just depends on the dog and what kind of shape they're in - just like with people. You'd want to work up to it - starting w/ walks, fast walks, then short jogs, longer jogs etc. :). |
How about buying a Jeep Rubicon Pet Stroller/Jogger, so when your baby has had enough, she can ride, and you can continue to jog? Sheila |
I used to Rollerblade with one of my yorkies. Molly would start out pulling me down the road and by the end of our walk she would be trotting behind me!! She used to love it! I would say to start out slow though and see how far your Yorkie could run! Have fun! |
The treadmill training sounds awesome. I wish I could do that for my Yumi. We just had 5 days of straight rain...she was miserable. |

Max runs with me everyday! I started him slowly. We would walk and then run for 5-10 minutes over certain areas of our morning walk. He quickly learned where his run sections were and would start pulling like crazy to get there quicker. We increased over time and he can now run 3 miles easily. Three things to look out for: Be prepared to stop quickly. I don't run a fast pace with him b/c he gets distracted and has to stop occasionally to sniff. :) Another thing is to keep an eye on are the pads of your baby's feet. I take Max on the trails as much as possible. Lastly, make sure your baby stays hydrated and watch out for the heat. |
i wish!!!!! i have a lazy yorkie.. when i walk her, she backs up, enough mom , and thats only 1 block... no wonder why she chunky |
I think it's a great idea to run with your Yorkie. You may want to work up to the 3 miles. I used to run with my Westie and he loved it. We kind of went out of shape together during the long New England winters, and so we'd gradually work up to our 4 miles. Unfortunately, we're both very out of shape as we didn't run much last year. I'm not sure if I can take him out running now, as he's a bit over weight ... perhaps a walk/run session to work up to 2 miles may be in our future. Now, Trixie who is 6 months, I would take it easy with as well. She's full of energy too, but we did a practice 1 mile run the other day and she seemed to do great with it, but she was totally wiped out when we returned (slept for a few hrs). So, I may take her out for a 1/2 mile next time. Good luck with your running buddy! |

Yorkie Running It is definatly okay i would say i go running with my yorkie all the time, 3 miles was usually where the run would end but we did it at about a 21 minute-ish pace for the whole 3 miles.. so i would definatly say its okay and now i know based on what other people are saying that its okay for me to bring him =) |
How much does your Yorkie weigh? There is a difference between a 5 lb and a 12 lb. |

.. I am having a hard time finding the pet one... it keeps bringing up the children's one and I am not sure that'd be safe for dogs. Thanks Sheila. Haley |
