Bad teeth and bacteria...? Some of you know that we just adopted an ex puppymill boy, he is about 3 years old from what I understand. His teeth are pretty bad and he is going to have to have most of them removed when he gets up to weight...my question is, in the meantime, he is playing with my two other babies, they share toys, food, water, they kiss and lick each other's mouths....can the bacteria from his mouth be spread to the other two? Thanks for any advice... |
I can't say for sure but I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Some Yorkies are just more prone to teeth problems than others. |
hi Jancie, I think I would try to brush and clean all of their teeth but each of them having seperate tooth brushes each day. That way you have cleaned out on a daily basis the large portion of bacteria. (too bad they don't know how to rinse and spit!!for scope too) Do you know if your baby has lost teeth due to cavities or periodontal disease? You ask a great question...I am a dental hygienst and it has really got me thinking;) ! Also your other babies are very healthy and i'm sure have a great immune response and are able to fight off bugs. If they were my dogs, I don't think I would be too worried about that especially if he is going to have his dental treatment soon. I think I would check with my vet. If they were people, theoretically , if one married spouse has periodontal disease over time i do feel like the other one has increased chance of getting it. The key to help prevent getting it is removing that plaque on a daily basis. Thank you for rescuing your boy. He is one lucky fellow to have you!!:) |
I believe that his teeth are diseased, not cavities....He has lost a few of his front teeth already and the ones in the back look green....I can't tell what his gums should look like because they are mostly black, which I don't know if that's the normal color or if it may be because they are in such bad shape. He has some bad dragon breath too. I don't know when he will be able to get his teeth done. He is just skin and bones right now and dr. won't do anything until he puts on some weight. I have some doggie toothpaste, but I bought what was available at the store and I have hesitated to use it because it has flouride in it...I wasn't sure if it was ok for dogs, any input on that anyone? Thank you both for your help at putting my mind to ease...:) |
I surprised the vet doesn't want to put him on antibiotics until you are able to have them pulled. If they are that bad they may be poisoning his blood right now |
Oh wow, I didn;t know that could happen....are there symtoms that I should be aware of? |
