New(and old) users of Raw diet..Please Read..(long) I am having a problems with Penny eating.:( I have enough food to start my own store! She won't eat anything but babyfood. No kibble (unless it has baby food, and most of the time eats around it) I have Ennova-puppy and Chicken Soup dry. I have Puppy Plate canned she stopped eating this, also. Yesterday she was itching alot and licking her paws.(checked the pollen count, it was down) She has never done this before. I am at my wits end. Buying food for nothing.(I have 1 1/2 cases of Puppy Plate) I am about to try the Raw. I know nothing about it. What to buy, etc. I was also wondering how much it costs monthly to feed one dog.(doesn't make a difference, just curious). New users- how was the transition, how did your baby do on it. Was it worth it? Next question. What kind, flavor to start with? I read about Medallions, and people who use it are happy. I have to make a decision soon, so any help is appreciated. Thanks so much.:) |
Oh yea, she is 3 mos.old.:) |
Sorry you are having such problems..Take a look here. It works well for us. We use Force... no wheat...raw...dehydrated organic Thehonestkitchen.com |
We just switched to raw almost 2 months ago and I couldn't be happier. I am using the Nature's Variety Medallions. If you go to their website you can put in your zip and it will tell you places near you that may have it. Call first because some might not carry the raw but have their kibble/can food. I am thrilled that we switched because Blaze would not eat much either and he never turns his nose up now. You might want to pm Wylie's Mom (Ann) or MyFairLacy (Michele) they are the ones that helped me out and both have a lot of knowledge regarding the matter. As far as cost - it depends, I find that the rabbit is the most expensive here (NY) at $15 per bag and then the others Venision and Lamb are about $12 per bag. We tried Beef but that was in the beginning and Blaze was itching a lot. I might try it again because he now does not itch at all! I think he is allergic to some form of grains. As far as transitioning them, I took the advice of Michele and Ann and just switched them cold turkey and they both did fine. There was no upset stomach issue's at all. I recommend going to nature'svariety.com and reading on there if you havent already. You can calculate by your pups weight how many medallions you need to feed! Good luck and I hope everything goes as well for you as it has for us! Amie |
Thanks to both of you.:) Will check out your suggestions. |
I totally agree - Raw is the way to go (if you can) - Both Roxy and TJ were on Raw for about 6 months and they LOVED it!!!!! But I have found out they have issue with their livers, so they can't have meat anymore :( But if they were healthy Raw would be my #1 choice. Best of Luck! |
Jamie is on NV Raw as well. I switched him cold turkey. Once day he had kibble. I didn't give him anything for 12 hours. The next day he had raw. He used to only eat the kibble to stay alive and spent most of his time playing with it. Now I put his food down and he eats immediately. He was itching and had watery eyes before. Now he doesn't. The raw has really helped with alot of things: his potty schedule, his itching, his coat is gorgeous and shiny. But my favorite thing about the raw is that he LOVES it! Just be careful the first couple of days and tear/cut it up into smaller bites. The first morning I served it to Jamie still ice cold. He gobbled it up in 2 seconds and then threw up. I'm sure this was because he ate it so fast on and empty stomach. No I tear it up smaller and we haven't had a problem since. |
:) Good to know. Thank you. |
my two youngest kids eat NV raw and have also eaten AFS mini patties...i prefer the AFS but it is harder to get and has to be shipped (and since it is frozen, the cost is out of this world...my shipping cost was more than the food! ) they love the NV raw...i did transition them over about a weeks time (i mixed kibble into the raw) ... they both did great and had no upset tummies! they are soo happy and just cannot wait to eat ... seriously, everytime i go to feed them, you would swear they have never eaten before in their lives  lol my oldest, gino, cannot handle raw for some reason...at least none of the 3 NV medallion flavors or AFS beef mini patties...it gave him horrible runs :( so he still eats kibble (canidae)...i swear he still wants raw though and will look at his bowl for a couple of minutes and look so sad before he finally eats :p |
Hi! :) Got your PM and am happy to help you, here or via PM. I'm taking a little hiatus from YT - so feel free to PM me if it seems I'm "scarce" :D. I think the Natures Variety Raw Frozen Medallions make switching very easy bc they are pre-measured so there is no fuss and mess - so that's why you hear a lot of folks going that route. It may be cheaper, in the long run, to buy the "patties or chubs" - but maybe get the medallions to start. You can go here to enter your baby's weight/activity too see how many to feed: http://www.naturesvariety.com/ifc.la...FE8Fqoi39A6F84 I'd recommend starting with lamb or venison - and they are great long-term meats as well (beef can be a bit rich to start, anecdotally). There is nothing wrong with doing a "hard switch" - meaning - stop kibble, start raw immediately. Then again, there is truly nothing wrong with mixing some in WITH the kibble - and please don't let anyone tell you differently (it's a myth that raw and non-raw cannot be mixed). Digestive basics: food enters stomach, stomach is a churner, digestive enzymes released according to fat-carb-protein-toxin (not whether it is "raw or non-raw") - when food is ready - food moves to intestines for further absorption/breakdown etcetera. SO, it's up to you. I did a hard switch and had zero issues - even with my Marcel - who used to have terrible ibs/colitis/digestive issues. I used to feed kibble, then homecook, now raw - and I am sold on raw. But I totally support ALL forms of diets and think there is a place for all of them. So, it depends on your comfort level. My dogs' health has never been better - and their teeth are cleaner than ever, glossy coats, teensy poos, non-smelly poos, no dog breath. Love it. Easy diet. Speaking of RAW, hubby just called to see if I wanted to go out for sushi - so I'm off! But please let me know how I can help if you need anything else! :D |
PM'd you.:) By the way I LOVE sushi,too.:D |

Thanks. How much of a portion do you feed? |
I feed Nature's Variety raw medallions, and Lacy loves it! Most dogs seem to just love the raw and gobble it right up. Nature's Variety makes a 1lb sample size that you can buy, and they also take any food back and refund you if your dog won't eat it. I'd definitely suggest trying it |
I tried Primal. I asked for NV med. She gave me Primal. Didn't realize it til I got home. Went thru three flavors. Penny didn't like it. Finally put parm. cheese on the beef one and she ate it. But that kinda defeats the purpose.:( |
Making the switch to Raw Here are some RAW possibilities; There's another form of RAW and it's called "The Prey Model" method. The idea is to mimic mother nature as much as possible and feed whole animal parts. The chewing, ripping and tearing at the meat works wonders for a dog's teeth! And, they think it's a fun workout! You can also grind your own raw. The purchase of the grinder will pay for itself within the year! You can also check and see if there's a raw food co-op in your area and order your raw dog food (grinds and/or whole) from them for a lot cheaper than NV or other brands. But yes, it's a fantastic way to go by starting out (or stick with) with NV! Raw was a journey for me, and it is (for the most part) for everybody to some degree. Tweaking with the protein/bone/offal ratio is a big part of a raw feeder's life. Like Wylie's mom said, cold turkey switch is the way to go for most dogs. Yahoo has a few support/chat groups for raw feeders as well! There's also a wealth of info in the net about raw. Rawfed.com, rawfeddogs.net, rawlearning.com |
