How do you tell if your dog has a fever and....
 
How do you treat it? I don't have a thermometer for her. She had her booster shot today and while i don't think she has a fever right now... how would i tell if she did have one and what can i do about it should she develop one? Layla tends to have adverse reactions to shots so i want to be ready should it come! thanks!

Hi Marci - I hope Layla will be fine. But, just in case you purchase an inexpensive digital thermometer at the drugstore (usually for under $5). The same one you would use for yourself!! Use a little lubricant and make sure the tip of the thermometer completely goes in her rectum (holding her tail up and reassuring her while you're doing this). The digital thermometers take less than a minute to read. A normal temp for a dog is 100-102.5, some sites say up to 103 (although I've always heard this indicates a temperature in a Yorkie).

Thanks Jodie.. i think tomorrow i'll go to the drug store and pick one up. I know i should have one but just never thought i'd need it... right now she seems ok. In 3 weeks she will have her rabies vaccine and i'll be very worried then! thanks again!

You're very welcome. I actually took Sissy's temperature yesterday for the first time (which is why I know what a "normal" temp is, cause I had to look it up). She had vomited a couple times during the night and wasn't acting herself and her tummy felt very warm. Thankfully, her temp was at 102 and didn't go up and she was back to normal today.

did you just use vaseline for the lubrication?

if she was at 103 would you have called the vet to see what they said?

Poor girl.

You can use K-Y jelly to lubricate a thermometer.
