DIARRHEA from Food change? HELP ME
 

hello,

My Murphy is going through a stressful time along with me.

He was on Wellness Puppy Food Dry, and I was trying to change his diet to a more adult one. He is 1 yr old. and 4 lbs.

I got him some Innova EVO and mixed it with the puppy food, but he ate all the innova evo everytime, not thinking about crushing the 2 together till he gets used to well, he now has a really bad case of Diarrhea and he vomits now and then.

The vet had in the hospital today to watch him, and he is now on meds to help the diarrhea and voimiting. He just poops out yellowish water

He seems to eat and drinks, and he wants to play abit, but the vet told me to watch his sugar, which I never thought of because he was 1 yr old, not his size ...silly me.

What suggestions can anyone give me to how to go about this food change, and how will I know if this kibble will agreed with his system.

I need help on the this bad....I am praying this diarrhea clears up, so he wont get weak from it.

this is just my personal opinion. iw oudl take him off the meds and feed him stricktly boiled chicken and white rice until it clears up. then i woudl start to slowly intorduce his food back in. If you can i would go to an adult Wellness since he was on a puppy wellness... how long did you take to change the food over?? how long has he had the diarrhea?

I tried to give him wellness super5mix before and he would not eat it, so i tried innova evo. He has had the diarrhea since yesterday, but he eats and plays like he is fine. He drinks water and well, I tried to give him rice, but he wont eat that, just the chicken, he picks out.

Do you give the chicken and rice with broth or just kinda wetish?

someone suggested canned pumpkin?

if this just started yetserday.. i woudln't worry TOO much... i thought maybe it was going on for a week... but diarrhea is VERY normal when you change food.. do you have any puppy food left?? can you put half and half to make it easier on his stomach? canned pumpkin is GREAT... it has to be pure and not spiced... seei f you can get him to eat 1 tsp.. Layla hates it... it is torture getting her to eat it... just keep an eye on him.. i'd take him off the meds for sure.. you can battle this without them :)

The vet told me to mix the puppy food and the innova 1/2 & 1/2, but to crush it so murphy can not pick out just the innova and keep him on this for a few weeks.

To look at my baby you would never think he was ill, he looks fine, just that his poop is like water and he seems to leak it all over the place at times tonight. I have put up his exercise pen in the dining room and put his crate and things in there. He is pad trained so its abit easier.

I tried crushing the 2 dry food together and adding alittle boiled chicken so he would eat it, he ate some which made me happy.

I will get some canned pumpkin tomorrow, and try it

as long as he is eating and drinking and acting ok... i woudl't worry too much (ok.. i know.. easier said than done) but Layla will sometimes have diarrhea for 3-5 days for no apparent reason... still eats and drinks well... it's when he stops doing any of those things that you should worry.. but i think the pumpkin will help a lot.. keep me posted ok?

Thankyou so much for the advice, sometimes I dont know what to do, and I am so glad I found this website. Its wonderful to read and get ideas and to be able to talk to others who may be going or have gone through the same thing.

My Murphy has gone through so much when he was younger I was praying never to have to go through it again.

He is so small and loveable, my life would be so empty without him.

I hope he gets better soon. I think Innova Evo is high in protein and may have been to rich for him. So if you are going to fee that I would reintroduce it vert slowly.

i know how you feel. Even though Layla has had diarrhea before.. i am still worried CRAZY every time she gets it... it's a normal yorkie mom thing :) glad you found us :)

I'd skip the Evo.
It causes GI upset in a lot of dogs.
It could have been the switch but I would suspect the food.
I would go with something else.

i know nothing about Innova but Crystal knows a lot... so i agree :) :p

This is only true for the Evo, not regular Innova.
Regular Innova canned is way too high in fat though.

The fat content in Evo seems to cause the problem.

well i am going back to the regular innova small bites and mix it with the puppy food until he is better, thats what he ate before this all started.

I love Wellness but he wont eat the any of the adult stuff from them, even the canned food...i wonder why

but now Monday has diarrhea and is throwing up.

I gave her boiled chicken and rice and 5 hours later she threw it all up.

As you suggested, I just gave her some Pedialyte, she was reluctant (and Friday was hogging the bowl anyway)... but she did get about 2 tsp..

Can this be a delayed reaction to the shots still? (3/24)

Katharine, you came to the right place.

Hi. My advice is to follow your vet's recommendation and complete the medication. The meds help prevent further infection in his tummy. Pumpkin (Libby's plain) is great to keep on hand when your pup has poopies or constipated. Just a small amount though with each feeding.

Vomiting and loose stools are the beginning of pancreatitis which is very painful and can be dangerous. Pumpkin will not cure pancreatitis but will help with stools. However, the stomach has to be settled down before you can feed anything new.

Evo is an excellent food but high in protein; I use Orijen. Go to the website and read about the food plus the recommended amount to feed. As I said, it is higher in protein and fat content.

Introduce any new foods very slowly. Charlie is 11, eats Orijen and made the mistake of giving him too much Innova "Evo" venison wet food. Much too rich and he ended up with loose stools, no vomiting. Stopped the wet food, added pumpkin to each meal and still had to be careful how much pumpkin I put in his bowl because if it is too orange, too much pumpkin.

It could be, but not likely.
If you are unsure and it continues, talk to the vet.
Two tsp. is plenty.:)
Ellie had soft stool this morning and she went too much, so she is on Pedialye right now (about a tsp. or less every 2 or so hours).

well i had a loss-sleep night again...

Murphy still has the runs but its changrd back to browny color, as he is eating alittle. no vomit, but i am giving him alittle boiled chicken and rice and he seemed to like that. His little butt is so red and raw looking, someone told me to put cornstrach on it, not talc but the kind you use for cooking.

I feel bad that he is going through this. He is pee pad trained but i notice when he is not feeling good, he goes anywhere right there.

I keep my handy towel and spray by me, hanging off my side, like a cowboy ..LOL ....

Well hopefully it will continue to go back to more normal. When mine have a sore but from diahrrea I put a little vaseline on it and it helps real quick.

I am a big fan of higher protein and grain free, as long as there are no liver issues. BUT, the thing about EVO, in particular, is that it is one high protein kibble that is HIGH in fat - and this seems to be the trigger, for many dogs, that causes diarrhea and vomiting.

So, I don't think there is necessarily a sensitivity here to high protein - but it sounds exactly like the one I've been hearing about high fat in relation to EVO. There are plenty of regular fat, higher protein, grain free kibbles/canned out there - is that what you're looking for? As for the raw butt, put some hydrocortisone cream and/or antibiotic cream or diaper rash cream - that will soothe and reduce some inflammation.

If the diarrhea continues, I'd get him off the chicken and rice asap - and instead go to store, get canned (or fresh if you have time) sliced white potatoes. Micro a can or 2 - mash up, add a bit of butter and salt - feed this instead for a day or 2 until he firms up.

We are currently dealing with Pancreatitis issues. no vomiting but- loose stools. the first stool is ok though- then towards the end it has been a bit runny and now again this afternoon it was all runny. Not squirts, but just a big plop of very mushy poo.

The specialist says we need to feed low fat and high fiber. The only thing she is eating is Wellness wgt mgt - it has 6-10% fat and 8 % fiber. I also started last week adding fiber to her food 2 x's a day- 1/4 teas of Konsyl fiber supp. vet said it was ok.

She is getting a retest for her upc in 2 wks then we are off to see a nutritionist/holistic vet because this diarrhea and high lipase/amylase values have been going on long enough and I am tired of the runny poo. i don't mind cleaning it up at all- that's not what I mean- I am just tired of seeing her not poo normal. That means it's a problem and I want her to start pooing normal! She is not vomiting but I am having such a hard time with trying to figure out "what to feed" in the mean time before getting in to see the vet about nutrition. SHe has high lipase and amylase values-

her last labs from a week ago were:
Amylase: 1346 (normal range is 290-1125)
Lipase: 1236 (normal range is 77-695)

I don't know if I should start feeding raw or what to feed her. The wellness is great food but it is not great for her with the issues she has. we are currenty dealing with protien in the urine due to kidney issues. High bun (60) and she is passing gas today too and it is so smelly.

I can tell her tummy doesn't feel good. she is playful and all but the passing of gas and little toots i have heard her let out I know her tummy doesn't feel good.

I have read about the canned pumpkin but I scared to try it. will the canned pumpkin make things worse with the pancreatis issues?

Will pepcid ac or tums help her? I can't see how the fiber supp we just started her on could cause diarr?
