Prophylactic Flea Collars? Hi, My Roxy is about to embark on her first summer as a full grown Yorkie. I am afraid of fleas- we have fenced in our yard and the dogs have full run of it. She did not suffer from fleas last summer as she was a puppy and didn't have full run of the grass yet. Do you use flea collars or sprays? Are tehre any known side effects from these? |
I use Frontline on Milo. |
If I had to use chemicals, I'd use Frontline or Advantage probably. Flea collars are very dangerous. All of these products have side effects.:( |
From what I've heard (including the vet) the collars are basically useless. Before I knew that, I had one on one of my dogs - she got it caught in her mouth and got pretty sick. She shook for over an hour and lost control of her bladder and bowels. She was foaming at the mouth... it was awful. I will never, ever but another one. I am looking into something more natural this year so I'm not putting poisons into their little bodies.:( </IMG> As far as side effects from sprays and drops... they basically are a poison and they enter the bloodstream, so how can they NOT have side effects at some point? I know they are so easy to use but since I have found out more about them, I'm kind of leary to use them. |
I just started using flea treats cause my little Haylie Mae had a seizure  with that advantage :thumbdown it scared me to death. Flea treats is a Vitamin B1 tablet and is a safe alternative. Since I just started with it 3 days ago I can't tell you how it is working cause they said to give it at least a month, but it should work sooner. You can check it out for yourself on fleatreats.com :) |
Any chemical product can have side effects. I don't use anything for fleas. I must just be very lucky but then my dogs don't go out in the yard much. I have never let my husband use any chemicals on our back yard either. We do go camping often but haven't had problems yet. I think that if you brush and comb every day and bathe weekly you shouldn't have a problem. I have a real phobia about getting fleas as we had a huge problem years ago and it took literally several years to rid our house of them. (we had a cat at the time who went outside) |
