Lepto and traveling? are there maps or something that tell us where they would be at high risk? we like to travel and thats the part that worries me. also is there a link that will tell me how the dogs get the disease? its bad enough i hav to let lacey get the lymes shot because it was a big problem around here last year and she has mvd. i really dont want to make her get that shot also so if i knew more info about lepto and where it is we can at least stay out of those areas. |
Michigan and New Jersey are having a big problem right now. I'm not exactly sure where else but it is picked up from coming into contact with rodent urine (stay away from puddles and slow-moving water and farms). I would not want to give this vaccine to a liver compromised dog. It is way too risky. Ellie doesn't get the vaccine and I LIVE in Michigan. She had such a bad reaction that she can't have it. I just have to be careful what she does outside. She also spends most of her time inside. |
hmmm bummer about the michigan part i go there all the time. but if thats how they get it i dont think i have to worry to much her feet dont touch the ground unless she has to pee. i really need to find a way to get the stroller i want for her to. it would make things easier when we take the truck. when we take the harley i have a frount pack thing for her. although now with all her food and meds this summer should get interesting, i found a bike back pack that is small and has a thing that looks like a hot water bottle in it so i can take her reverse osmosis water and there is also room for a lunch box so i can keep her meds and food cold. i got it at walmart for 20 bucks. i feel better now knowing how they can get it thanks:) |
And I should have said, because rodents urinate in the grass I would think if they touch it, it could be risky. Ellie does go to the bathroom outside though and I just try not to worry. I'd just google "lepto symptoms" and take your dog to the vet if they get any of them and have them check for lepto first. The disease can be treated but sometimes it is diagnosed too late since it is not too common. |
