Runny eyes and smells questions What do I do about Baxter's runny eyes? And he smells even right after a bath which I think is coming from the eye discharge. Am I right? HELP! He's 13 weeks old and I've never had a dog with runny eyes before. Previous dogs were a boxer and a pomeranian. |
I cut the hair near the eye so n hair pokes them in the eye. On a puppy I would use warm water and if you feel you need to you can buy tearless dog shampoo to wash their face with. Use a fles comb to comb out the crusty stuff that collects in the corners of their eyes. You have to keep up with the eyes every day or it gets out of control fast. At first your puppy will hate this but talk softly and be gentle and soon he will just sit there and allow you to do what you need to. If the smell is really that bad go to a vet because there may be an infection. |
Pixie had very runny eyes I switched to distilled water and it really helped. No more red staining and a lot less tearing. Then washing their face every day helps. I found that tearing sometimes gets better as they grow up. |
We have well water so I will give that a try |
I use earth bath grooming wipes, I clean his eyes everyday. I also take him in and have the hair around his eyes trimmed. I have heard that using bottled water may help. |
One more thing, oder from eyes or the ears . Should take him to the vet. |
I don't like to trim the hair around eyes bc I don't like a scissors near the eye and I like a more natural look. Also, trimming doesn't necessarily mean the tearing will decrease. Since your baby is a pup - he may be tearing more because he is teething - they will often tear more when some teeth start to poke through (or, try to poke through), so keep that in mind as well. If there IS an excessive smell in his ears and from his eye dishcharge - then the vet should check for a yeast infection. |
You should really ascertain where the odor is coming from. If he's smelly even after a bath and it's not the eye discharge, it could be the food you are feeding him. Switching him to a higher quality food helps wtih the body odor. |
maravilhosa teared bad when teething.. and as long as I kept her hair up off her face she was ok, if her hair was down.. he face would be soaked wet.. so it has the be the hair and teething I would think.. anne |
I should have posted back earlier but the distilled water did the trick!! My husband says Baxter is on a better diet and water than he is! Unfortunately that's true. |
I know I already said this - but stinky eyes (vs. just runny eyes) usually means an eye infection. In fact Marcel just went from watery/seasonal eyes to his eyes being a bit stinky - I took him to the vet and sure enough - conjunctivitis, which is very uncomfortable. |
Hi, Epsilon also has runny eyes and I bought some distilled water. Just got it yesterday so I'm not sure if there are any results. But my question is if the distilled water is healthy? Isn't he missing out on important minerals? |
Well, I called my vet and she said distilled water is fine... if anyone was wondering. I also think that it's works! His eyes seem less runny... but it's still only been like 2 days, so we'll see! I'm so glad I found this thread. |
