bordetella I was wondering how many of you get bordetella for your dogs. I have not gotten it in 16 years since the dog I had it given to got severe kennel cough wich took many weeks to clear up. What have your experiences been? |
None of my dogs ever had a problem with it. I do know that to go to daycare or to board this shot is a must. Buddy gets it yearly but daycare said he had to have it every six months. He no longer goes to daycare! Once a year, per my vet, is enough. |
Mine get it in the shot version and have never had any problems. I wouldnt get the nasal one because I have heard of dogs getting kennel cough from it |
I don't give it but if I got another dog the vet would require it (not required for Ellie since she is so sensitive). I would only give it one week before hospitalization because I won't switch vets over the issue but I don't like the vaccine and dogs do get kennel cough from the intranasal vaccine. I wish the vaccine was never created... |
I can't stand that dang vaccine. I never get it unless I absolutely must. Wylie has had once bc the boarding kennel insisted (he was okay). Marcel has never had it, and hopefully never will (think I'll pay a pet sitter instead). |

Lacy had the shot the first couple of years and the intranasal this past year...no issues. I'm getting a lot more cautious about what I'll vaccinate for though... Bordetella is easily treatable if the dog does get it, and some dogs still get it even if they've had the vaccine. If I got the vaccine again, I'd only get the intranasal because I think it offers the best protection. But I'm thinking I won't vaccinate for it this year |

MY puupy got kennel cough from the shot... I would only give it if I have to. |
I make sure both mine get their bordetella's each year. Most grooming places insist on it. Also, mine go with me everywhere they can and meet up with other dogs, especially dogs parks. And should they need to be boarded, they are all up-to-date and ready to go. |

"Noncore vaccinations should be administered whenever the risk of the disease is significant enough to override any risk of vaccination. For example, kennel cough vaccine may need to be administered up to every six months in a dog repeatedly being kenneled or exposed to groups of dogs at grooming salons or dog shows." So, in your case, it's probably worth the risk of vaccination, ya know? :) |
They can still get the disease even with the vaccine (it is said to be milder but who knows). There are way too many drugs being put in our dogs' bodies and I just see no end to it.:( |

Thanks again! |
Franklin got (and probably will get) Bordetella. It's required for grooming, day care, and dog parks -- all of which are places we frequent often! He got the intranasal and did perfect with it. |

I don't give it to any of mine, unless I absolutely have to. Its something that is easily treatable so I'd rather take the chance that they get KC then give them the shot. THere are so many different forms of Kennel cough and bordtella doesn't cover them all. My bichon, who rarely had shots lived til 20. IMO vets overvaccinate! |
We go to daycare, the dog park, and the groomer-so it's required. But...I have a friend who has a mini-schnauzer who got KC, and it took MONTHS to clear up. The poor thing coughed, sneezed, and hacked horribly-they ended up taking him to 3 vets and then to a University vet program...all agreed it was KC, and just a tough strain. She spent so much money, let alone all the time she was worrying about what was wrong with little Gus :( He did eventually get better, but it was awful for them both to go through it. The chi I had got KC twice too-we didn't vaccinate for it since we never took her much further than the backyard or for short walks, but somehow, she did contract it. I'm guessing from going to the vet for a checkup, or possibly from the neighbor dog. It was no fun to deal with it, and I felt so bad for her when she was sick :( |

i have them done every six months for my girls. They go to daycare and playgroups so it is a must and plus i want to be safe than sorry. |

In your case, with Layla, I agree that it's not the best choice for her. With Emma and Milli, I have to get it in order for them to go everywhere they go :) And you're right-it IS like the flu shot, one shot doesn't prevent all strains of it. They can still get KC sometimes even if they have the vaccine...but the chances of getting some strains of it will be lower if they DO get the vaccine. In our case, since Emma and Milli are exposed to so many dogs at the park and at daycare, it gives me a little peace of mind for them to have the vaccine. |

It WOULD be our luck that we would get that ONE or two strands that aren't covered in the vaccine :p |
