Gaining weight after being neutered? I have been given conflicting info and I would like some opinions please. One vet told me awhile back that after you have your pup spayed/neutered that their weight gain will slow down considerably and that their activity level may drop as well so to slowly cut back on their food intake. Then I was informed by another vet (just recently) that once you spay/neuter, your dog will gain most of their weight until adulthood. Blaze weighed in at 5.2 at six months and one week and he (the vet) estimated that he may level off at 10lbs:eek: since he was neutered. What are your thoughts on these comments? Autumn was spayed last April and she weighed on spay day 4.7 and she is now 5.5, so I did not see the considerable weight gain on her so I just assumed I would not see it on him! Thanks for any info you can give!!! |
Mine have all gained to..At least 1/2 pd:rolleyes: So funny, We call them fatty Attys:p :p |
Yes, it can happen. I wouldn't personally reduce food intake UNTIL I saw it happening though since all dogs are different. I found it really funny that pro spay/neuter people on the internet spend so much time saying dogs don't get fat and that is a myth. Then Ellie's nutritionist says right out that caloric needs decrease after altering. |
My boy was an adult when I had him neutered. He went from 2 1/2 - 3 pounds to 7 1/2 pounds. He was very thin before however, and is more healthy/sturdy now. |
I'm pro spay/neuter but I KNOW they gain weight after being spayed or neutered, I have 2 that ballooned and is now on a diet but then again I have one that is at a normal weight size after being neutered but in my experience all that I've spayed/neutered gained weight with a rare occassion that they didn't. I reduced food when I noticed the weight gain and when that didn't work I had to put on prescription food. I'm also going to be switching foods soon and learing alot from this fourm :) Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
Lulu was 8 months give or take a few days when I had her spayed. She was 3lbs at the time and after she went up maybe four or so ounces by the time she went for her suture remova. So I do have to say there was a weight gain. No change in her personality or activity level. |
Max was 5 months when he was neutered and weight about 2-2 1/2 pounds now he is 3.2 pounds so with him I dont see alot of weight gain, I guess it all depends:confused: he is now 1 year and 4 months |
Lucy was 3/5 lbs when I had her spayed at 6 months. She will be a year on Thursday and she is a tad over 4 lbs (which I'm thankful for!). Her activity level is the same but she likes to sleep in in the morning now...lol. |
Good to know! Is the weight gain more so for males or females? Or is it the same across the board? I had Addison spayed at 7 months and she has gained since her last vet visit but for the life of me I can't figure out where. My little guy gets neutered soon so wish us luck! |

Thanks for all the info! Hopefully he wont go from 5lbs to 10lbs but if he does.............then there is just more to love!!!!;) |
Sunnie was just 7 lbs before he was nuetered, but since nuetering he ballooned to over 9 lbs so he is on a diet as well. Sunshine weighed 5 lbs before her spay and weighes just a little over 5 lbs now.. but she did go up to 5 1/2 lbs shortly after weaning her puppies. She has since gone down to between 4 lbs 14 oz to 5 lbs 2 oz. Then there is Beamer who weighed 6 1/2 lbs before he got nuetered at 6 months old.. Now he will be 1 year old in a couple of weeks and he weighs 6 lbs 2 oz. so who knows?? lol |
oo i hope it doesn't happen to Teddy. He is already 8 lbs and will be neutered soon |
kandy used to weigh 4-1/2lbs, then I bred her when she hit five pounds, then when I had her spayed in September at five years old she really, really packed on the pounds. She now weighs eight pounds. I am at my wits end. I free fed so it isn't fair to not let her eat. I just had her sister, Frankie spayed. Woe is me, these two girls will likely eat me out of house and home. |
